    Velodrome 8/8 & 8/9

After asking the questions about whether my camera/lens AF was working properly, I finally got a chance to head back there and try out some new settings. I changed my AF mode on my D2h to Focus, and changed my FPS rate from 8 down to 3-4. Also knowing more about the AF capabilities of the camera & lens, instead of trying to make the camera do something it couldn't, I tried working with the combo and use it to the best of its ability. That and shooting the Wed & Thurs night races gave me the chance to shoot in MUCH better light than at noon

When I head out this week, I get to shoot from the inside of the track, so I'll be able to get some different perspectives and all that good stuff.

    4. I really like this image, but am wondering whether it would be improved by cropping closer to the rider

As the sun went down I got the chance to have some fun with some rear-sync flash

    6. When panning on a curve, (such as this) should I leave it as is, or straighten the image?

Nice job, and I'd say 7's the best. The one thing I see is the color appears off some. #6 I wouldn't change it but thats up to you.

    Re: Velodrome 8/8 & 8/9

The color might be off due to the wonderful golden sunlight I was getting.

I have a couple of the panned curve shots that I tried to straighten, but they just looked wierd. When on the outside of the track, and only good spot to get a clean background panning has a light pole right in the middle of it, which IMHO ruins it. When I get a chance to shoot from the inside this week I'll have much better backgrounds.

Nice. #7 gets my vote. Great pan and motion! How's shooting at the Velodrome? Do they take kindly to paparazzi?

    Re: Velodrome 8/8 & 8/9

The problem of shooting at a velodrome type location is there aren't a lot of places to shoot from, especially on the outside, they are just too small. You managed to do very well considering the locations you had to shoot from.

Yeap! I've only been there a few times, but I plan on making weekly trips out there. Its a 5 mile ride by bike so its not too bad to carry my gear. If you want to come out sometime, let me know.

Its a great place to practice technique since after they ride past, you get about 20 seconds to do a little chimping & make changes, and they come right back past ya.

Very nice outing Scott. The D2h is a great camera but you are so right in that with it as well as most other camera you need to understand it and learn what it does best. I've had mine for almost two years and still playing with it to squeeze more out of it.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??
