Taking a hit on the sidelines...

We have talked much in the last week or so about the new rules and the restraining line on the sideline. Supposedly it is there to protect us from taking a hit however with or with out the rule I got taken down at this Saturday's game. I was behind the line as I was suppose to be and the sweep came to my side and right into my lens. I got off four or five good frames before I started to retreat. Unfortunately the ball carrier took a hard hit just as he reached the sideline and lost control and basically did a rolling block on me even though I retreated all the way to the track. I went down on my backside as he rolled over my feet. the Nikon D2h was high in the air and didn't even feel the shock. That's more than I can say for my backside. That was not the first time I have taken a tumble at a football game but it has been a long time since it happened. I am fairly well known by those that follow the game in my area so it didn't surprise me much when my wife called me on my cell shortly after the event and ask if I was OK. It seems that the local radio broadcasters made a big deal out of me getting taken down and my mother who was listening to the game was calling my wife to make sure I was OK. It's a little embarrassing to say the least to have the several hundred fans that were at the game know you got bounced on your backside but to have them broadcast it on the radio, well that just added insult to injury. Long and short of it is though the extra two yard that they set us back of the sidelines means very little when you have these young athletes going all out. However by being that far back I missed several more images than usual because of poor angles on the plays and other obstructions especially the sideline official.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Glad your OK OT! Those hits seem harder the older we get, but iin this case I am not sure whats worse, the hit or the radio commentators announcing your demise I guess the good side is it wasn't on TV although then you could have showed us a video clip

Having been run over on the sidelines I know it's no fun, but it was a bit funny as the cheerleading coach came up and said "oh, they didn't kill you, darn, I wanted your camera's"

    Stay safe!

Re: Taking a hit on the sidelines...

I'm fine. No lasting effects at all. I had the presents of mind to keep back pedaling and not to turn my back. If I'd turned my back and been hit from behind the camera would have gone down in front of me and crashed into a hard track surface. As it was I hit on my most padded part and I was able to keep the camera high and out of danger above me. The player actually came over and offered me a hand up and ask if I was OK.

Glad you're OK. I never got hit, but I realize it's only a matter of time.

Nope. I only pick the ones where the entire frame is filled with blurred stripes and I know that on the other side a really great play is unfolding.

Re: Taking a hit on the sidelines...

Just a little side bar to the story about taking the hit on the sidelines Saturday afternoon. At lunch this afternoon I ran in the local radio station play-by-play broadcaster. The first words out of his mouth were are you OK. He was the one that told the whole world back home about me going down. I assured him I was fine with no after effects at all. Then he proceeded to tell my wife just how I'd gone down with my camera held high. This evening Joy and I went to Lexington and on our way home stopped off in the town adjacent to where the game was Saturday. We were in a restaurant for dinner and I hear someone hollering across the room about photographers that couldn't stay on their feet. I look over and here is the play-by-play announcer for another station that broadcast the game giving me a big belly laugh. Just so happens when I was work in broadcasting several years ago he had been the news man on my DJ shift. He has been doing area sports for several years now and we generally will see each other at games through out the season. So now I know that not only did I get local coverage but my little spill got regional radio coverage as well.
