    Smile skateboarding photography

i'd like to here how non-skateboarders think i could improve my skateboarding shots, not so much timing but showing the trick the skateboarder is doing while still creating an eye-pleasing composition.

any criticism is extremely appreciated! thank you

I was told by a old guy. Nothing improves your pictures like getting close. He said if you feel like your in it with them then you are close enough.

Panning at lower shutter speeds to show blur around the subject is a powerful shot as well.

    Hope this helps

id say im not ignorant to the sport.

but def get alot closer on the second one. getting low... if you know the person doing tricks plan ahead to where they will do it and get on the ramp looking up, along the copeing as they slide towards you etc.

so close range lens shots that show more action, or seem more dramatic? i've seen people pan with a skateboarder before, i've never really tried it though, seems risky with film, i hate wasting to many shots :X

Film on skateboarders without a script and rehearsal and a run through is monetary suicide brother. Get a cheap digital to try out your compositions and to practice your panning. The panning motion will be the same regardless of camera your using.

    Re: skateboarding photography

i am a skateboarder, and also a photographer.

when i shoot skateboarding shots, i like to get real low and close.

you shots are really good, but to actually get the trick, you have to get close an focus on the board.

i've found on sunny days, my camera works really well with a very fast shutter and a small aperture for skateboarding.

    Re: skateboarding photography

I like the first one. contrast is great and love the B&W. as for the second need to get closer. getting the red from the rust would be great. even if you have to use a flash do it. check out my site for skateboarding shots. I just sit in one spot and they end up doing tricks for me and I show them the pics and the they get braver and start to show off a lot. I dont focus on the board but the persons head, the board moves faster then the person . what camera are you using.
