SI's Final Four gear setup - awsome read!

Found this on another site, and thought I'd share it with everyone here. And I'm still struggling with getting my pocket wizards & flash setup

That setup is used for other things as well, Super Bowl among others. Taking the camera out of the photographers hands and remote controlling it will someday spell the end of photographers as we know them now at sports events. I personally don't like taking the human element out of it. SI has been doing this stuff for years and is one reason I don't bother with them any more, all the photos look the same in SI, waste of $$ IMHO.

Interesting they are using tethered cameras and the firewire interface.
That means they don't need the optional ethernet/wifi interfaces for the cameras.
I supose that's a security consideration too, do't want someone hacking yoru wireless and copying your images ...

I am surprised so much image moving is manual, but there must be a reason for it as they have their own custom developed software.
Interesting they use ACDSee, not any of the newer fancier programs.
I remember form another SI article the reason was speed of display, they were reviewing at 2 images per second I think - certainly I can't get Lightroom to work anywhere near that fast.

You might be thinking of the article about them & the super bowl a couple years ago. I think I have it bookmarked on my laptop at work.

I heard about ACDSee through the article about the super bowl, and I've got it now. Its really fast at building image previews, and once the high res previews are done, I can browse through 1000+ images very fast.

Very informative. But light years from anything I'll ever be involved with.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

whaaaaat? You've got to be kidding me. Yes, all the stock shots look the same, but that's just what's needed for the story. If you actually look in books such as "hot shots" you will realize how amazing SI photography is and how different their shots are than what the average shooter provides.

theres no way remote shooting will ever take over human-controlled sports photography. They are two COMPLETELY different animals.
