Shooting a Water Polo Game Question

    Howdy All,
I'll be shooting a Water Polo game this coming weekend in So. Calif. and I was wondering if anyone had any tips shooting at the pool...

Thanks and I hope to post any decent shots taken after the game.

What kinds of sports have you shot before? What kind of camera gear do you have? Do you know what the lighting will be like?

Re: Shooting a Water Polo Game Question

As far as I can tell, it'll be sunny (upper 90's) and I'll be shooting with a Nikon D90 & 70-200mm 2.8 lens

I'm wondering if I need a polarizing filter or ????

Normally I shoot at motorsports events.
With the water being a major part of the frame, I was just curious as to what I need to plan on purchasing (within reason) to make this a successful shoot.

    Thanks,
    Roger

Ahhh - outdoors - that's great! I was picturing an indoor pool and that would be a challenge without a really good high ISO camera.

If it's sunny you will have some serious contrast issues, although the water may reflect enough light to sort of act as a fill. A flash would be nice but I'm not sure it would actually help. I would take one and try it if you have one. I would definitely take a polarizing filter. And if you can, get out to an outdoor pool in the next few days for some test shots. I always recommend a test run of some sort when you're shooting something new. That gives you the chance to make some of the inevitable mistakes before the actual event. There's always something you didn't think of

Okay, sounds good, I've got both the flash and a filter and I'll be sure to take them.
But I'll be getting there a few hours early to do the trial & error portion before my nephew's game starts.
    Thanks for all the help.

I'm still going through my 2300+ images, and so far I'm a bit disappointed.
I think I need a longer lens (200-400mm would have been xlnt)...

But stay tuned and we'll see, I'm hoping I got something decent worth posting...

We all need a longer lens. All the time

Have you checked out the Nikon 28-300mm VR zoom? It ain't cheap but it really does do it all and do it wonderfully. It's the only lens I had when I was testing the Nikon D4 and there were very few occasions when I wished I had something else. Here's a link to the 28-300mm VR article I wrote when the lens was announced: New Nikon AF-S 28-300mm VR FX Superzoom Lens | Camera News & Reviews

I have that lens, but I wasn't convinced that it would be fast enough...
Coulda, woulda, shoulda, I'll be shooting another Water polo game in November so I guess I'll try it and see what happens.

How did you like the D4 ????
Is it everything they say it is ????

Thanks for the tip about the 28-300 !!!!
