Shot #9 and the last are the ones that stand out for me. The skin fold of the stomach on #9 and the advertising on the last.

Man, you've gotten really, really good at this. I think back to the dark, gritty photo you first posted here and these are a world away. I know it depends a bit on equipment and the venue lighting. But your intuition and timing have improved a lot, too. I love watching photographers grow on this site! (Not that the site should take the credit, but it's great to watch the progress.)

    Thank you much, John.

As the story goes, I was faced with some stiff competition, and was forced to either become much better in short order or settle for being second best. I chose the latter, and eventually even surpassed my unscrupulous rival.

Some of my "early" work from October of 2006:

Sweet - thanks for posting those. I remember being psyched to see some ultimate fighting when you first posted. We needed some sports diversity and your photos were way different than the ball sports and my mountain bike stuff. This still isn't the busiest or richest sports photography forum on the Web. But I think we've all come a long way since you shot those photos

By the way, I watched the BJ Penn UFC fight a couple of weekends ago and I found I kept thinking about shooting and what kind of challenges there would be. I was specifically thinking of your work. I never really thought about shooting that kind of stuff before. It's kind of cool that your photos have opened my mind to that kind of sport as a photo subject.

    Thanks John.

You should find a local event and try it out first hand. It'll be eye-opening to say the least.

How do you clean blood spatter off your camera? ;)

That's easy- use a UV filter and wear a black cotton shirt.
