    The Release

I seem to be doing more x posting with all the new galleries and forums, but at any rate here is an image form a local high school game last week. With the Sigma lense (80-300 f3.5-5.6 APO) I have gone to manuel focus because I feel the auto on the D70 is to slow and I have missed some shots when the camera refused to fire. Any other have any observations on this. Image shot at 1/1000 at f5.6 and ISO of 400.

    Autofocus Issues

This is a cool picture. The more I watch baseball, the more I like it. I found myself staring at this photo, taking in all the little details. Maybe it's only if you're United States of American, but baseball photos all feel timeless to me.

I have a whole bunch of techniques I use for shooting with AF cameras. For this photo I would have prefocused, but I still would have used autofocus. If you're having trouble getting the focus to lock, try focusing on something next to your subject. Ad check to see if your camera has a setting that allows you to shoot when the focus isn't locked. I have my cameras set up to shoot no matter what. I can shoot all kinds of out-of-focus crap

    ball on the bat

I like the picture, I'm a big baseball fan, and take tons of baseball pictures. I'm looking for the elusive bat on the ball, and I come close all of the time, but still haven't hit it. Here's an example of the ball coming off of the bat during a bunt. I think that's going to be the easiest one to get, as the batter is not really swinging the bat. I have a 300d, and love it, with the 70-200m f2.8 lens, it makes a great combination.

    You need

For that kind of timing you need an EOS 1D, a 1D Mark II, or a D2H. Better yet, you need three of them synchronized 1/100th of second differently, all on the same release. The you need to just hold down the shutter release after the pitcher releases the ball. You'll get the shot.

But that takes all the fun out of it, doesn't it?

Out of focus crap, hey John, that's ART.

Maybe it's because I'm not from the US of, but I have no interest at all to baseball. I just find it boring and uninteresting. But it's because it's not a familiar game to me. Although the finnish 'national game' (that only people in the countryside play nowadays..) is a variation of baseball. That's damn boring too.

Oh yeah, and I don't like ice hockey either. Football (soccer to you guys) I do tolerate, but I'm not that interested in that either. But motorsport (cars, not bikes) gets me going.. ;)

I know what you mean about the ball on the bat deal. Here is as close as I have gotten. This was done at the same game as the previous image.
