    Real Bummer....

Well I found out it could be a while before getting my 1D back. They said last week it would go out the next day... suddenly they don't have parts and it's sitting there waiting on the parts which are backorder. This bites bigtime! I need it this weekend, and next week. Turns out it could be 3 MORE weeks!
Then they said... be glad you don't have a Nikon, it could 6 weeks before they get to it. I replied, well their crap is cheaper to buy and fix, I could buy two Nikons and lenses for what I paid for this 1 body...now I sit here twiddling my thumbs waiting on you to fix my gear...even 'er

Ouch. I feel for ya man. I had to send in my D30 a few years back for a body repair-took over 3 months to fix because I sent it back 3 times to get it fixed right. There's something to be said for having 2 cheaper bodies and always having a backup. How often do you have 2 bodies go down at the same time?

Actually... right now! Yes, my DRebel is acting up now.... argh.... I think Canon did it to make a few $$ or should I say a few hundred $$. Oddly, it will only work with one of 6 cards... yet all six are OK in the papers camera.

    Weird!

Nah. Canon probably had nothing to do with it. It was the invocation of Murphy's Law after I commented on the unlikelyhood of two camera bodies going down at the same time ;)

    Re: Real Bummer....

This is part of the reason I went to Mark II's. I still have one 1D left, but at 70,000 plus images and several fairly costly "repairs", it has become a backup to the backups.

This year in looking down the road, I'm coming to believe that most of the DSLR's are really only going to be supported fully for less the 3 years. Particularly with the introduction of new models all the time.
I'm wondering what the advent of the 5d era will mean for some of its predecessors.

Have you consider leasing or renting a body. The cost can be applied with several places toward purchase and you can "try" a newer (alas not an old friend admittedly) set of features.

I keep "fixing" cameras for people who just bought their first DSLR (and in some cases first good camera ever) by showing them how they work. I wonder if the service groups are being overwhelmed with units that don't need repair at all, only that someone has read the manual!

    Good luck!

I feel for you. I had a similar situation with my N80 a couple of years ago. I was use to having at least two bodies (usually 4 that were good to go) when I was shooting manuel. When my only auto focus went down during the first half of an important basketball game I was screwed. Nikon had it for 2 months and me with no backup autofocus that I had begun to rely on. When I went to digital I figured I could use the film for backup but always kind of felt nervous about it. When the D70 started to give me intermittent error messages I decided it was just to risky and that's when I got the D2H. But the truth is I just feel so much more natural with two cameras around my neck than one.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Re: Real Bummer....

    Thanks everyone!

Well i got what I needed to get through tonight, of all times for the paper to want extra stuff shot besides TD's and fumbles they wanted the homecoming king and queen, and, oh yeah the BAND ... what??? Thats a first wanting the band.... I'm a sports photog... not a band photog
It went ok though... barely.... good thing I knew the prom queens big vrother though

I thought of renting.... too darn much though, they want both legs and one arm (let you keep the other arm so you don't drop their gear!).... couldn't ge the credit for the lease... I guess being disabled cuts into the credit report or something... Heck, I got more money now than two years ago and no rent to pay, now they won't do it and I paid my bills. go figure.

I'll just bide my time until the 1D reappears. Whew, glad it got more than 110,000 "clicks" before it needed repaired! but I stay awake at night wishing I had MKII as well.
