Photos from the April 12th Tuff-N-Uff "California vs. Nevada"

California vs. Nevada was the first sanctioned amateur MMA event to take place on April 12th at the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. There were 22 fights on the card!

This is my fourth MMA fight, let me know what you think of the photos.

    Good Stuff

You've definitely got some good stuff here. I'd edit them a bit more as I think some are definitely better than others. Like any kind of photography, being your own toughest critic is important. It's a matter of quality control. Since I haven't shot this stuff, I'm not quite sure how to critique them. But I do like these ones the best:

Thanks for sharing these here. Your exposures are generally right on. I guess some of the photos I didn't like don't quite communicate the intensity of the fight to me. These ones were the best for critical timing and angle. And besides the basics, timing and angle are probably the most important elements for fight photos.

Thanks for the reply. MMA / boxing photography is a lot of fun for me. I'm wondering how many "perfect" shots a professional captures during each event - a ratio.

The fighters move so quick, it's tough following everything. This event had 22 fights.

Every event is another learning experience.

Now this is action. The last one PJ posted makes me want to scream. That's a good thing.

I'd be interested to see what the shots looked like with your shutter speed set a little quicker. Some seem overexposed to me, but that could be my monitor. I'm using my junky laptop right now.

Again, great action and something I don't see often.
    It's not blurry. It's bokeh.

Yes, they are a bit over exposed. The lighting changed throughout the evening and I forgot that I had +.07 EV added.

Aperture was f2/8 @ 320, ISO auto (200-1600). There's another fight in a month, I'll shoot ISO auto but limit it to 200-800 to see what I get.

I feel that I'm on the right track as far as comosition and framing. What do you think?

I assume you're shooting in JPG and not RAW, so you don't have so much latitude to fix the exposure ?
Framing, looks like you're using the centre AF point, which leads to a lot of the action in the centre of the image.
I don't see how you could do much else really, unless you go for manual focus. There's not enough time to switch AF points in the middle of the fight !
