    NIKON SHOOTERS UNITE!....MKIII Smackdown

As many other Nikon shooters probably have, I have read with jealousy the threads exclaiming the wonders of the Canon 1DMKIII. Well, Nikon finally stepped up and announced the new D3 and D300 in Europe!! It's not always an advantage to be first. Some of the highlights:

Full Frame CMOS sensor at 12.1 MP
    ISO range to 25600!!!!
    13 fps!!!

And much, much more. See the release here:

So my question on this would be... so will having one of those cameras make you a better photographer?

    Of course not.

Practice will help, so will getting critiques, listening to others, asking questions, personal development and practice can make more difference in my opinion.

They might make your photographs better, techincally, with better dynamic range, faster AF, more latitude to crop, better low light sensitivity.
I think the Canon has easier to use controls, with the joystick like the 20D, and that might make the difference between getting set up for a shot or not.

But neither camera can improve your vision and imagination to get the shot.

Just having a certain camera body doesn't make you better, knowing how to use it, along with peoper glass (lenses) for the job at hand will help though. The main thing when you upgrade to the pro bodies is being able to use the added functions and so on to get the results you want. If you don't need things like high ISO quality then you don't need to spend the $$ for these versions, you could probably get away with older versions.

    Re: NIKON SHOOTERS UNITE!....MKIII Smackdown

Obviously I knew the answer to my own question...LOL

I just find it EXTREMELY funny that people just HAVE to have the newest camera... because it will do THAT much better than the last one they have... and that brand bashing on something as ridiculas as a Nikon/Canon debate has to go on like this all the time...

I do agree though that the thought of ISO25.6k does sound intriguing... but unless you are shooting poorly lit gyms it really doesnt have a huge whopping $5000 benefit over a Mark II or Mark III for that matter... I think that the fact that Nikon catching up (and if you want to call it surpassing) Canon is good for competition and shoot, I hope that they fixed the high ISO noise (not that THAT is even bad on their new models) so that my girlfriend can get a new camera and put her D200 as a backup come Christmas time frame...

    Re: NIKON SHOOTERS UNITE!....MKIII Smackdown

I have the lucky ability to shoot both Canon (film cameras, though I have used their digital bodies) and Nikon cameras. Personally I shoot with Nikon gear. My first SLR camera was a Canon (An old T-50). I spent a few months decided whether to upgrade to a Canon or a Nikon SLR. I went Nikon because I knew I could use my Dad's manual lenses until I could afford some AF glass.

The only thing that bugs me about Canon is the bodies don't fit very well in my hands. Otherwise I enjoy shooting the Canon equipment, but Nikon is just sooooo much better

Oh, Nikon never really had any problems with their AF, it was their shutters I hope they fixed

shoot whatever you want to shoot. much like basically every other thing in this world, there is nothing best, only the best for you. people would like you to believe that canon is better than nikon, or vice versa, but they're wrong. I liked arguing it just because it's fun to debate it, but in the end there is no best camera. The technology in the cameras is virtually the same, and any good photographer will find a way to overcome the small limitations that each brand of cameras have. once again, it's not the wand, but the wizard.

Healthy debating is a good thing. I don't participate because my knowledge is lacking, but like reading because there is always something I can learn from it. I learn so much from reading what you write Livin, it's ridiculous & I so appreciate it.

You guys are good for a laugh which is what I figured when I posted this. As for the equipment making you a better shooter, I think we have all seen by the photos on this forum that the gear is only a tool. The one thing that both the D3 and D300 offer that really interests me is the higher ISO ability with lower noise. For those of us who shoot HS football and basketball in the caves they call facilities, that is a huge feature. I would love to be able to get a reasonably clean image at ISO 6400. We'll see when the image tests come out how good that is.

Don't worry Nikon shooters,Canon is still on top. Competition is good and at the end,we'll benefit with more features and better prices on both sidelines of the fence

Well until IMAGES are actually available that are from real world use of these new bodies we won't know anything about the ISO and noise issues. I will say that as far as Nikon trailed Canon in high ISO performance, even before the MKIII came out I do not see Nikon being able to close the gap that much or take the lead, especially since they do nat do the research on themselves on the sensors and they buy from third party makers. Again though, we'll wait till we see real world users shoot with them in normal situations.

This is far from the truth. Head to the digital forums at naturescapes.net. Canon has not fixed the issue, far, far from it. Not a Canon hater here either, I use the 20 and 30D, can't afford the "1" series.

Hmmm, well Tim, according to some who use the body daily they haven't had any issues since the firmware update, but then these people may have a different firmware version as they tend to get things before anyone else.

According to Rob Galbraith's site, the beta version of the firmware is being made only available to pros.

I can't believe how badly Canon screwed this up.
