Hi All,

I just joined the list. I think this will be a good forum for feedback, based on some of the reviews I've read so far.

I take the risk and put a couple shots ourt there for comment. I'm here to learn and share.

The first one I shot with my 55-205MM f/3.8. Was a little out of focus as the team was quicking approaching.

The second was shot with a 50MM (no f-stop info available).

Welcome Steve. Always glad to see someone new and something different. The only thing I'd suggest is the two posted shots are tad dark. Not sure what gear your using other than the two lenses but if it is digital you may need to shoot a step over what your meter says. Otherwise nice job, I really like the reflection in the top shot.

Welcome aboard Steve. Hope that you become a regular and give us more of these alternative sports. I'm afraid that most of us (myself included) focus on the major sports and there are so many other exciting action sports going on out there. I really like the reflection on that first shot. As John said they are both a tad dark on my monitor but your compositions are spot on. Let's see some more.

Thanks for the input about the being dark. One challenge I have with the winter sports, which really got me into this whole idea of shooting sports since I gain full access, is the high intensity of light from the snow in the background. Any thoughts on how I can address that in the shot, or is that something I just need to address electronically afterwards?

meter off the snow so it isn't blown out, then use a fill flash to lighten the athletes. should work, but may need alittle bit of playing around to find the right amount of flash needed.

Welcome to the site, Steve! I really like that first photo, although I wish it were sharper. Most of the images look too dark so I think maybe you need to adjust your exposures just a bit. The snow stuff is tricky, I know. I don't know how you meter, but I'd go at least one stop over on those. Sometimes that's not even enough. And I would also adjust with Photoshop. All of my images get some Photoshop adjustment. I consider what the camera captures as just raw material to work with.

Cool to see some different content here. I shoot mostly mountain bike photos. But last year I started experimenting with ski photography. I plan to do a lot more skiing this winter. So we should be able to compare notes.

Welcome Steve, good to have some new sports on here.

Your skiing shots, the meter in the camera will be fooled by the bright snow into under-exposing the people.
I suggest you either over expose by a stop or so (bracket a few to find out how much suits your camera) or shoot in RAW mode so you can use a wider exposure range when processing later in PhotoShop or whatever you use for editing.

Welcome! Loooooooooove your first shot. Like it was mentioned I'd lightening. I tend to shoot a bit dark and just do a quick run through of my pics through ps.
