    need some info

Im going to Heartland Park Topeka on the 20th to take pics for the sportbike races. I am wondering if its wise to use a polorizer to control the colors and contrast from the sun? But if I use it I will loose F stops correct. I am also planning to buy a TC1.7 for more reach but then again Im loosing 2 stops with this as well. what are your thoughts.

    Re: need some info

I've never really heard of using a polarizer for shooting sports or an event like sportbike racing but I'm sure it can be done. A polarizer will affect your TTL meter reading but if you are using it in sunny conditions I'm sure you'd be able to crank up the shutter speed to get stop action so I wouldn't think it would have a negative effect.
If not using the polarizer you may want to try spot metering on some of the bikes as well as some of the backgrounds to get an idea of the variance in meter readings so you get an acceptable exposure for each. If it is real bright you may want to open up a half or full stop or if the bikes are against a bright background you may want to experiment with your metering from evaluative to partial, etc. to see what gives you the best exposure. I would just get there early and experiment with various angles to the sun and with various meter readings and over/under exposures to find what works best. Let us know how it comes out.

You can use a polarizer but I have not had much luck due to the fact the sun/brightness is always changing here, I have opted not to use one, just to much of a hassle for me. If you try it post some photo's and let me know what you did if you dont mind With the speed of racing I like to shoot more than fuss with the camera I guess. Have fun!

With a car, the main use I find is to clear the reflections from the windows to see the driver.
Don't have that issue with a bike

But if he has a clear face shield (meaning the rider) the photo will rock

That's true Lori, but if it's sunny too many like those natty gold visors you can't see through.

Take a polariser, my CPL is always in my photo vest.
You may not need it, but if you don't take it you will kick yourself later !

Just get your panning well polished to cope with the lower shutter speed

    Re: need some info

Im practicing my panning by leaving the collar loose with my lens with my mono pod and following cars by my house, twisting the camera so i can keep the same angle... Do you guys and gals do the same or am I the only geek to do this? lol

Any other tips? Im working on getting a press pass to ge the moey shots like you all.
