    More Small Guy B-Ball

Took the D700 out for a test drive last night at a 7th grade basketball game. I went with the Idea of shooting at a much higher ISO than I have ever done with any previous cameras. I'm just starting to learn this camera so the results were not perfect by any means. With that said here are some of the results. Every thing wasshot at ISO 3200 and aperture priority of f2.8 the shutter speeds went from 320 to 500.

Here are few more. I might add there was very little PP. I did a slight levels adjustment on most and a very small USM on all.

Really nice Larry! I really like the younger kids because they put so much into the game. The D700 is also working well for you. The only thing I would do to these might be a little Noise Ninja etc. to smooth out the skin on the tight shots. But they are very clean as is.

Thanks Daniel. At 3200 they are as clean as I have been getting with ISO 800 on my other bodies. the last one was really the only one that bothered me, but than it was so much better than I was getting that I let it pass. I've never used a noise reduction program but I do need to think about it.

These are great OT, especially since they were shot at 3200 ISO. You captured some great action and expressions. A big thumbs up.

Those are definitely good shots, highlight what the camera can do in capable hands. And yes, it's odd the last one appears noisier than the others, but it's one of my favorites for "capturing the moment".

One thing I noticed with other cameras when shooting high ISO, be sure to turn off any dynamic range or dynamic lighting enhancements your camera may offer. These often try to pull more detail out of the shadows or darker areas by doing localized tone curves, basically boosting the ISO even further than intended, generating extra noise in generally useless parts of the image. If needed, you can always go back and do this manually in post processing, but this way you start with a cleaner image... Ignore this if you are shooting RAW instead of jpeg, as your camera shouldn't be messing with the RAW file.....

I think there are some basic and trial versions of a few good programs out there like Neat Image, Noise Ninja, etc... I'm always in favor of try before you buy..

Thanks Jim. I hope as I become more familiar with the camera they will improve but to be honest I'm pretty pleased with the way these turned out the first time out of the box with the new equipment.

You may be on to something NoKnees. I did have Active D lighting on. I'll need to research that and see if it could effect the noise level. Thnks for the heads up on that and the trial versions of noise reduction programs.
