    More Help

    Please offer your suggestions.

It was cloudy and sprinkling at 9:30a here in Dallas. Olympus e500 with 50-200 2.8-3.5 set on Aperature priority dialed to 2.8. I set the WB to cloudy. I was trying to get the ISO to 400. The camera should set the shutter accordingly - correct? The dark pic is that and the other pic is in Auto instead of the Aperature mode. Thoughts or suggestions?

    Also - will a 70-300 or 100-400 f4 work on a cloudy day?

    Re: More Help

Well in the first photo, it looks like you got your ISO of 400, and the camera settings were 1/4000 @ F2.9. I can't figure out why the camera chose that, which is probably the reason that I shoot manual exposure most of the time now.

2nd one is definitely exposure much better.

Your lens should work on a cloudy day, as long as its not towards evening.

    Re: More Help

This is the EXIF info I get for the first shot:
    Camera Make: OLYMPUS IMAGING CORP.
    Camera Model: E-500
    Image Date: 2007.10.06 09.21.44
    Flash Used: No (Auto)
    Focal Length: 112.0mm
    Exposure Time: 0.0003 s (1/4000)
    Aperture: f/2.9
    ISO equiv: 400
    White Balance: Manual
    Metering Mode: Spot
    Exposure: aperture priority (semi-auto)

Here's the EXIF for the second shot:
    Camera Make: OLYMPUS IMAGING CORP.
    Camera Model: E-500
    Image Date: 2007.10.06 09.23.19
    Flash Used: No (Auto)
    Focal Length: 88.0mm
    Exposure Time: 0.0050 s (1/200)
    Aperture: f/2.8
    ISO equiv: 100
    White Balance: Manual
    Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Creative Program (based towards depth of field)

I concur with Scott about the overall appearance of the shots, the first is underexposed and the second is better exposed. You glass should work fine on sunny, cloudy, foggy, or even rainy days (take caution with rain though).

It looks like for some reason your camera was tricked into a high shutter speed when you changed ISO to 400, because if you look at the EXIF for the second shot ISO is set to 100. Also Metering for the second shot is Matrix - which I'm guessing evaluates the entire scene. Metering for the first shot was spot which evaluates a very small portion of the scene and gets its reading.

For a shot with grass (close to 18% grey in BW), light colored jerseys, and dark colored jerseys your truest meter reading will come from the grass. In this case, you have that nice strip of concrete to have metered from as well.

    Hope this helps!
