    Middle School BB Tournament Winners

This is one of the teams I have shot quite a bit this year. They finished the season tonight by winning their tournament on top of an undefeated year! Two of these seventh grade girls actually play on the HS varsity team. A lot of fun to shoot, and the paper loves it too!

I think the flash is too high to suit me Daniel. I like it when you can't tell there is a flash, or barely tell there is. It's OK though, I had flash issues tonight , one blew everything out, the next was a tad too bright, the next too low then back to blowout....oh well, it was Reserve wrestling anyway.....

Thanks guys. JS - I have to agree with you that the flashes needed to be dialed down a bit. I got there with about 4 minutes left in warm ups and they were already set to 1/2 power from one of the larger HS gyms. Oh well, that extra second each to move the switch would have been worth the effort.ut:

Love that first shot Daniel. One thing that I really like about the girls is the determination that you can see in them when they play. My daughter is a first year Middle School basketball coach in Tennessee. My wife and I are going down next weekend to see her coach for the first time in a weekend tournament. I hope to be able to come back with a with pictures to post.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

hahaha, I was late last night too, of course they told me (the paper) it started at 6:30 but it was really 5:30 for both events and I barely got the last quarter of the girls freshman basketball then three matches of the reserve wrestling Quick night though

Daniel, I really like that first shot. Lighting looks pretty nice. It appears to be coming from off camera left. Are you using two speedlights or what setup are you using for your basketball?

I use 2 Sunpak 383s mounted on $1.99 spring clamps and fired with RF remotes. Here is a shot of the setup from the opposite end of the gym and a closeup of one of the flash mounts on the railing.

Re: Middle School BB Tournament Winners

Nice setup Daniel. I was hoping to get some superclamps for Christmas but the spring clamps would probably work for me. I have a set of pocket wizards and umbrella swivels, so I'm set other than a couple clamps. Thanks for sharing the info.

Re: Middle School BB Tournament Winners

have you tried shooting from against the wall with the two flashes aimed at the white wall? you'll keep a lot of the light power, and soften the shadows a lot.

if you also open up the lens some more you will be able to blur out the background (which is very important because the BG completely ruins the first photo) and it will allow you to bounce those strobes.
