Well acording to many of the longtime shooters at 500 they thought this was the funniest shot of the month. The guy is sitting on a chair in the "trench" that is between the pits and the actual track. Each team has a guy there and there are others out there like a photographer or two, and a few IRL people. This guy has two jobs, one to use the pitboard so the driver can see it and also to watch their car to see if there are any leaks, tires going flat, loose parts or whatever. He was sitting there and chomping on this big old cigar. I noticed that he kept bending over when cars approached and that some actually lined up with his cigar and I took a few shots. This was the first one and it almost looks as if he wants a light or is about to get creamed by the car.
As for wearing a firesuit and so there.....why bother, if you are anywhere in the vacinity of a crash you probably won't know it....remember they are turning lasps at 220+ and the straightaway speed is much higher so if you get hit it's all over for you. I don't think I'd be out there, but then again it isn't much different than shooting at the state faigrounds where sprint cars fly past at 100 mph + and you could reach out and touch them. If one goes over the low guard rail anyone in it's path is a gonner....and I shoot there
