    lax under the lights

Went to my state's Div II Lacrosse champs last night, and shot under the lights. I'm really feelin that need for the 300 2.8 right about now. A nice little clothesline, wouldn't you say?

    shot at ISO 1600, f/2.8, and 1/640

and unfortunately, the ball is directly behind the st. thomas player's foot.

bright borders for a rainy day! yay!

You said you shot it at 1600 ISO. Did you do anything for noise or is what you posted how it came out? I shoot with the Minolta 7D and at 1600 ISO I get a lot of noise. I'm in the process of saving all of my pennies for a EOS 1D Mark II and would like to know how the noise is.

it doesn't have any noise ninja or neatimage applied to it. That's how it came out of the camera. A trick for shooting as high ISOs is to make sure you nail the exposure. overexposing by 1/3-2/3 really helps a lot. you blow out the whites, but you won't see nearly as much noise. I've seen a lot of shots at ISO 3200 that are easily usable because the photographers use this technique. If you underexpose then try to bring it back in PP, especially if you're shooting JPEG, you're going to see a lot of noise.

and I don't shoot with a mark II, only with a mark I, but I find that it handles noise very well. the general rule of thumb is that the bigger the sensor is, the better it handles noise. of course, the 20d is the supreme ruler in noise it seems, but the mark II is a full frame camera, so the noise levels are very low. But again, it's all about technique when shooting very high ISOs.

one thing I have noticed about the 1d Mark I is that there is a lot of noise banding, where a lot of other cameras dont run into this problem.

Actually the 1D, 1DmkII and 1DmkIIN are not full frame, they have a crop factor of about 1.3

It is better on my 1DSmkII than on my 20D, but I was surprised to find the 1DmkIIN almost the same as the 20D - given the 1DmkIIN has a lerger sensor with the same pixel count as the 20D.

CCD is what gives you the banding. Because there is not one amplifier per pixel.
With a CCD the images are shifted from ome cell to the next and read out through only one row of amplifiers, usually on the short edge of the frame.
You usually see banding in the direction the image is read out, along the longest dimension of the image.
A long dark exposure with the lens cap on may also show amplifier glow from the heat produced at the edge of the frame where the image is read out, because the sensor is Infra Red sensitive.

ah yes, now I'm remembering it all. I did a project on this a couple years ago, how digital cameras work. and I was thinkin of the 1ds that had the full-frame sensor.
