    Last Weeks Football Action

Just wanted to share a few from last weeks games. The first one was a varsity shot taken just before the sun down. The The rest were taken during our freshmen game. I need to work on my night games, as I will be attending all of my son's varsity games. For this first one I tried to shoot at ISO 1600 but my shutter just wasn't fast enough and gave me some soft pictures (second shot). Tonight I'll bring out the flash and try some shots with that.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

Thanks everyone. Here's a little to share about the one receiver shot I have posted. That kid was wide open in the end zone (as you can see) with the ball landing right in his hand, well almost (more like the wrists) and he drops the ball. That would have been the winning touch down catch and he would of been the hero. They later ran the ball in for a touch down two plays later but that catch would have been sweet. Thanks again for the comments.

I found this thread through the Featured Photos Gallery. Nice shots. But how the hell is #80 going to catch the ball with his eyes closed?!

    P.S. Hope that's not your son ...

Thanks DrRoebuck. Needless to say he's not going to catch it with his eyes closed, which is probably why he missed it.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

I just joined this forum, hoping to learn all I can learn. I looked at this thread because I am trying to learn how to shoot my son's football games....Your pictures are wonderful. I am a newbie, and will just have to do trial and error, and get whatever hints I can get from you guys. I have a canon 300D and using a EF 75-300 1.4-5.6 lense...(I guess I listed that right...LOL) Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...

    Thank you

    Hi Bfiredup,

I started with the 300D too. It does ok for football and for sure you can get some good shots. What I found was I had to upgrade my lens though. I totally changed my pics for the better.

Are you shooting during the day? If so your lens should do ok.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

Yes Jeta, so far they have all been day shots. And this weekend I went all out...got some good shots...Not professional yet....but good for a newbie...I stood on the sidelines down by the endzone, and zoomed all I could, then with some editing at home, they weren't to bad....would post one or two, but I am at work, and they are on my home computer.

We are in second place in our district...9-0..so the championships are going to be starting in a couple of weeks, then is when I think I will be doing some night shots. And I haven't gotten a new flash yet...not exactly sure what will work with the 300D....had a few suggestions....and I am looking into it.....I am sure I will need one before Basketball starts, which is the week after football...

    Thanks for your response...

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

BFiredup, I just pm-d you, but you might want to consider renting the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS to test it out. As far as a gym goes depending on the lighting I don't think your lens can handle it. I know mine couldn't. You'll need something faster.

Maybe we can get one of the veterans to comment here. I'm the resident shoemaker.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

BFiredup, As JETA said, I would seriously consider getting the 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens. This is an investment you won't regret. It's a great all-around lens for sports and a must for indoor shooting with basketball / volleyball / and wrestling. You really need that f/2.8. For your outdoor sports, such as football, you could add the 1.4x converter to give you some added range without taking away from your lens. This will only increase your aperture to f/4.0.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

I can see where it would help, and I would love to get one today. But just not able to make that investment yet. Hopefully in the near future I can. Aren't they heavy, and you also need a monopod, or are you able to carry it around comfortably?

Maybe Santa will think I was good this year, and leave one for me under the tree...

After carrying around the 300 the 70-200 is nothing. I will say this, when I first bought the 70-200 I did use a monopod. I'm a big guy and the weight isn't an issue, but having the monopod helped and keep the camers steady. It's not a matter of being a tough guy and hand hold everything. Some will also say that having a monopod is not good along the sidelines for the safety of the players. Well things will happen, as a fellow poster here know first hand, and sometimes you can't avoid it, but when you shoot always keep your eyes open and never forget there is a game going on. Be aware of where the action is and where it's going. I've never had a problem with the monopod and like to use it.

    Re: Last Weeks Football Action

Well Jeta suggested renting a lense to try, but where I live that isn't a possibility, or I would in a "Flash"....LOL....

    Something to look into.....

    Thanks again for your help.
