    JETA - re new lens

    JETA,
As I drove home I thought of something. You need a good UV (0) filter to protect that new lens. You can get a Hoya UV (0) for around $40, and it is worth every penny for two reasons:
1: it protects the glass on your lens
2: the (0) dose not affect color yet still blocks UV kight you don't want.

Any other filter than the UV (0) WILL affect color.

I'm so happy becuase I got it! B4 I ordered the lens on Sunday I wrote down everything I could think of to ask and filters were the first thing on my list. So I bought a UV filter and a 2 gigabyte memory card.

I'm going to throw my oldest son out in our batting cage tonight and mess around with this lens some. We are talking the worst lighting ever in my backyard.

I'm totally good to go to shoot in jpeg under field lights with this new lens. Correct?

Make sure it's a GOOD UV(0) The (0) is important!!!! It means it won't alter the color. Otherwise you should be good to go.

Uh-oh.... The package says canon filter UV haze L-39 sharp cut. This sure doesn't sound right. Could you advise me?

I've got to be at the high school at 2:30 PM tomorrow to help serve the players dinner. I may be able to run into town early to get the correct one in the AM. If I can't is it going to totally screw me up?

Sorry man, I had to duck out and didn't get back til now! Anyway, nope, thats not the right filter. I use Hoya, but any one that has the (0) should be ok. the Hoya 77mm (0) is right around $40+ tax.
I know with the Hoya at least it will not affect the shot color at all, the one you have actually gives it a haze effect, which can be fun to play with though.

Crud! I had a feeling after reading your post and looking at this filter it was wrong. I guess I'm going to have to do a quick B&H order. The guy at B&H was such a jerk when I ordered my lens. I knew I shouldn't have trusted that he picked out the right filter.

    Thanks JS!

It should, JETA. Your lens takes the same size filters as mine.

Say, while you're at it, would you like to order me one too? JK!

Re: JETA - re new lens

Jeta, I wouldn't worry too much about the UV filter. If you are dead set on keeping one on your lens, make sure it is of top quality like JS said. You have a top of the line L series lens, don't put a cheap filter in front of it. The fact of the matter is that any filter you put in front of your lens, is going to have affect your image quality. It might not be noticable unless you really look for it, but it will have some affect. The main type of protection you get from a UV filter piece of mind. Yes, you will be happy you have it, if you bump the front of your lens on something, but a good lens hood will give you the same protection, without affecting image quality. It certanitly is not needed, as long as you're carefull with your lens. Unless you are shooting in blowing sand, or along the coast where salt water spray may get on your lens, I wouldn't worry about it. If it makes you feel better to have it on there, then go for it, but it really isn't needed.

I swear I almost paide for two with the overnight shipping charge. EGADS! It was here in less then 24 hours so I like that.

I went ahead and put it on my lens. I've got 4 kids running around here and things always seem to get touched. I feel better having one on.

Thank you Michael. I had no idea it wasn't needed. This lens is so new to me that I'm pretty much clueless to it.

I can't IMAGINE anyone saying a UV(0) filter not being needed!!

#1: it will help keep stray light out of photos

#2: and more importantly it will protect that glass! There is always someone who thinks it's funny to put their finger on the glass...and possbly damage/scratch the glass. And there is always the possibilty of an object hitting the lens... this filter WILL protect it! It's cheaper to replace a $40 filter than get the glass repaired or replaced!

#3: this particular filter does not alter color

I'm not saying that a UV filter doesn't provide some protection for your front element, it does. I'm just saying that it's not needed. A lens hood also provided the same protection that you have listed here, without degrading the image in any way. A hood also helps to get rid of lens flare, as apposed to increasing it, by adding another layer of glass to your lens.

Here are a couple other threads where this has been discussed before.

Clear glass filters - image degredation or no?

Like I said in my original post, if it makes you feel better to have a UV filter on your lens, then go for it, but is certainly is not a necessity.

A lens hood will not protect the front element from people sticking their fingers on the lens, or an object striking the lens ( like the baseball that got mine this past spring). I had to replace a $40 UV(0) filter, not the whole thing, nor did I have to send it out to get the glass repaired.

And the UV(0) filter does not degrade quality at all. And it is a necessity, heck, I don't know a single pro shooter around here that doesn't use one, nor do I know that hasn't been glad they had it when something hit the lens.
I don't leave home without it!
