I've had my camera for a little while but haven't really gone out and experimented a lot so I've still got so much to learn but I'll be brave and post a few shots from last weekend. Rider is my nephew...
First photo, Geoff preparing to go out, going through the track
Second photo, on the grid
Third photo, during the race
Forth photo, my poor sister, how does she cope?

Well, I've obviously done something wrong to get the photos side by side:blush2: . Will have to investigate how to get them the correct size and below each other. Boy am I feeling stupid :confused5:

If you get the size right, the layout will take care of itself.
What software are you using to edit the photos?
Usually a "Save for Web" option will do the trick.

If you want to upload larger versions of your photos, you can use our Gallery which has no file size limit. But if you want to share in the forum, the limits for attachments are:

• 800x800 maximum pixels.
• 293K maximum file size.
• Up to 5 in each message.

I find in Lightroom that quality of 85% usually works, but it's different with each software package - there is no standard for how the JPG compression number relates to size.

They probably came out side by side because they are so small.
Don't feel stupid. Many new posters can't figure out how to post a photo at all.

It's the size of the photos that's the problem. If they're big enough to fill the width of the page they'll stack up like you're used to seeing. I'm not sure why they're so small. Did you resize them? If not, you may have posted thumbnails instead of the actual image files.

The photos look nice. I'd like to see them bigger. I can see that you have a more intimate, insiders view. I like the photo with your nephew behind the bike. That one is really different. That one reminds me of something I'd see in a race story in a moto mag. The photo of his mom is good, too.

Try getting the photos bigger. I recommend 640 pixels wide or so. There is a limit to the file size and dimensions. If you need help, let us know. You've got the upload down. You just need to figure out the sizing.

Thanks for your comments everyone. I'll have a sit down over the weekend and try to resize the photos to an acceptable size. On my computer the file size is huge (probably shooting them on too high a resolution on the camera) and they won't download directly onto the forum thread, so I put them into "photobucket" and downloaded from there. I can see "Nana" is just going to try and find some good software to download so adjusting the size is easier. I'm told that the free download of picasso (?) is good, does anyone use this? or can anyone recommend another

Photo-John, I know NOT to talk to Geoff prior to him going out, as you can probably imagine things get a little tense just before a race. He always sits off by himself and goes over the track in his mind. The photo of my sister was taken just after Geoff came down the home straight and disappeared out of view, it was then that the call went out that the race had been "red flagged", it was an extremely long minute before Geoff came barrelling down the home straight again. Thankfully the only injury to the rider that came off his bike was his pride.

Next year, I'm going to be even braver and go and sign the "Photographers Indemnity" so I can go where the professionals go, although unlike overseas events, here in little ole New Zealand, the spectators are welcomed into the pit areas. The little kids get a huge kick out of being able to get up close to the NZ "Champs". Oh, and we do have the occasional Australian Superbike Champ over to compete as well.

Best get back to work before the Boss realises that I'm mucking round.......AGAIN!!!!

You aren't shooting at too high of a resolution. There's no such thing. There's no point in buying a high resolution camera and then shooting at a lower resolution. If you do that, you might as well of bought a different camera. And take it from me, you don't want to shoot at low resolution, get a winner, and then realize it's too small to actually do anything with besides post it on the Web. That happened to me with a photo in 2000 and I've been bummed about it ever since. Always shoot at the highest possible quality - preferrably RAW. And then resize and compress as necessary on the computer. That way you never actually compromise your potential quality.

Try the windows power toy re-sizer.
You can re-size a jpeg with the two clicks and doesn't affect original.

I found the powertoy was worth everything I paid for it £0.00
I got no control over it really, just small or medium size.
Tried it, hated it, and junked it in favour of a custom Export setting in Lightroom.
I'm liking LR 2.3 more and more - but the promised ACDSee beta I saw at PMA might beat it.

Just because ACDSee will save its catalog on my network drive (I don't need it shared) and LR still can't put its database anywhere except a local drive.

I really like that first photo.
And the third, but nit-picking I'm not sure I'd have focussed on the pass-holder neckband.
I would have tried to focus on her eyes (well eyelashes) or her hands.

Thanks SW, I understand completely, the third shot was very rushed. My sister was just about having heart failure, not knowing if her son had come off and was the reason the race was red flagged. She was only still for a split second, when I decided to try and get the shot. As they say practice makes perfect and any advice given will be greatly appreciated
