I guess it depends on what market you are after.....
Let's keep in mind that most of us don't have the opportunity to shoot professional or D1 sporting events. There fore we shoot what we have access to, high school and youth sports. If we wish to market an images at all (and if we want that new lens or camera body many times that is the only way it will become a reality) than we have to shoot for and sell to the market available. What is that, family and friends. Who is the decision maker here, Mommy of course. I think you put it very well earlier the Mommy Factor is very big in deciding the way you shoot and present your images. Get those nice closeups so mommy can see her baby.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

You are my market Betty. Family and friends of the players buy my pics, but mostly Mom's.
    It's not blurry. It's bokeh.

Horizontal or Vertical? My answer is whatever fits the scene or scope of what we are trying to capture. I do find myself shooting vertical more now than in the past.
Cropped or uncropped nice shots Jeta and OT.

So to sum up so far......shooting Vertical or Horizontally is really the photographer's choice, and the deciding factor on that is the "Mommy Factor"....LOL...

    Great discussion guys...

Just a little oversimplification there, but I think it is fair to say that we shoot for our audience (market). JS as a newspaper photographer will many times be looking for a little different shoot than say I would if I know the game I'm shooting will be marketed to the families of the participants.

For something like long jump I can't imagine shooting anything but vertical if it is a front on view. I think it's subjective to every sport and photog ,but the Mommy factor wins out every time. lol

Speaking of long jump I get into my cropping conumdrum.

Which one? (not shots I'd normally post here, but they display what I'm yammering about)

    Re: Hurdles an Alternative Crop

Mommy factor.....I would buy both....each for different reasons, that we have all talked about already....close up....for facial.....other for height and distance effect....other wise no one would know on this event whether she went 2" or 2ft.....

    See....sold 2 by posting both...LOL
