    HS Volleyball Season

I don't think I've posted any of these here.. just some of the first season of volleyball I've shot, starting with the beginning working towards next week's playoffs...

The first is before I got a paid version of Neat Image so no EXIF in that one, all are ISO 3200 .. some 1/640 some 1/800 I believe.

Wow, nice set of shots. I just went to a volley ball match the other day to take some shots. Can you tell me what lens you are using and what setting you used for these shots and do you use a flash. Thanks S

50D with Sigma 70-200 no flash but that's my own preference because it is allowed.

    Re: HS Volleyball Season

The season ended last week with them winning two playoff games and getting schooled in the section semi-final by the team that's now on I believe.. their 8th straight state tournament appearance.. These players will see a lot of posts here if I post the next couple years..the main hitters are sophomores and the libero is a junior this year with only 1 senior who really contributes graduating.

I was able to go up to 1/800 for all shots of their semi-final loss in a gym with really bad light cycling. If I had more time I'd learn to shoot RAW and fix them ;)

The senior (same girl hitting in the 'featured' shot.

The libero, she was all over the gym diving, and this is the only shot I got of it! Unfortunately most of her saves went for not when the other team would still end up winning the points.

    Re: HS Volleyball Season

I shot the other semi before the girls from town lost, I have friends from both towns I've played basketball with in city leagues who's kids played each other...

My 'pet peeve'.. shots with eyes closed, not that the players care what we think!

Posting this last one to show ISO 3200 isn't ALWAYS that good...I went up the bleachers to see what I could get and talk to someone. I like the two guys reaction in the background, the AD and a parent I believe from the losing school.. they beat the team in white that won twice during the season but lost 3-0 in this semi-final.

    Re: HS Volleyball Season

I'm hoping the 50D/Sigma 70-200 combination can do basketball in the same gyms and get the same responses I've had to the volleyball, last year's basketball was with Tokina 50-135 which was too short for a lot of places where you have to shoot at a wall.

I will enjoy seeing your basketball shots as well.

I enjoy taking volleyball and basketball also and hopefully I can learn something from your posts. They are really great shots.

    Thanks for sharing.

Nice series. What do you have your noise reduction set at? I'm a wildlife photographer, but considering sports in the future.

    Re: HS Volleyball Season

I actually change noise reduction %'s in Neat Image based on what I'm seeing rather than setting up a profile based on my 50D... so it changes from volleyball, to some night football when I didn't have the flash on, to the hockey and basketball seasons (though I haven't gotten to a basketball game yet with the seasons just starting for real tonight.) If I shoot through the glass for hockey it then changes from the over the glass shots.

Different gyms seemed to require lighting them a bit more which sometimes required more neat image then.

How are you getting such clean pictures at that high iso? Is it the lens? Can you share some of your other settings? SS, apt, wb, etc.....
