How about something besides biking? (Softball)

Got a chance to try out my 70-200 at a softball game down in Charlotte. Nothing spectacular, but I liked the moment in time. I call it "Hit and Run."

Rip it apart, I am VERY inexperienced when it comes to sports, and I tend to learn fastest when crying...;)

The guy is looking at the viewer, which I think is an important thing.

He's not looking at the viewer. I think he's watching the ball. But that's important as that means he's focused on something related to the game. And I think his intense focus away from where he's running adds tension to the image.

But what I like best is the bat hovering just above the ground. That's awesome timing! That's one of the things I love about shooting sports. Since everything happens so fast and you aren't in control of much, you never know exactly what you're going to get. And you get surprises like that bat. Those surprises are what keeps me coming back for more.

This is a pretty damn good photo. The only thing that might have made it better would be a shallower depth-of-field. But I'm sort of stuck on shooting wide open right now. Maybe it's perfect just the way it is.

The lens was wide open. I was standing by first base, so the DOF got deeper the further away I focused. I know what you mean about the surprises, I find I get the same desire to shoot more just to see what I got. I have many others, some with bats in the air, some with balls touching the bat, I look at each shot and look for something else to find, some other cool little nugget...

This was in Charlotte, it was probably mid-50s at that point. THis was right after we hiked 5 miles in 65 degree weather. Monday I came home to snow, lots and ots of snow. I almost turned around and headed back.

BTW, I forgot to mention this was a crop, I shot it loose to try to get the ball in the frame, and this is about 60% of the whole shot.
