what a game! neither one was very good, so a lot of penalties, and some good shots. I'm very tired after 3 hours of shooting and PP combined, so ill post more later. Here's a couple shots I was showing other people.

I don't know why I love it so much, but this is one of my favorite shots ive ever taken. it needs more PP though.

Hmmm, nice catches there liven. I will get to shoot a hockey game Friday night, but not because of the game, but because Tony Sewart will be there I'll still get some on ice action though

Hey Liven,

The action is great, but when I look at them on my screen, they seem a little blue. Were you shooting under flourescent or tungsten lighting? What was your WB setting?

The first and 3rd shots are great, but the middle shot bothers me. It's an interesting angle, but I think it would have been better if we could see the goalie's front side.

they do have a tint, and need more PP. I didn't put all that much into them, as I'm only going to worry about the prints I sell. I like the blue tint, but these are too intense. The reason I like #2 is a) the angle b)the puck where it is and c) the fact you dont see this shot much. It's more artistic of a shot than anything else. I know it won't sell, but I like it for my own personal collection.

I shot custom WB. I don't like using any presets.

Hey liven,

you may want to do some weight room work before getting the 1D.....If three hours with a rebel wears you out just try three hours holding two 70-200s, thats egual to the 70-200 and 1D then add a flash. I can tell which flash I have just by the weight of everything, the 580EX is lighter

nah, it was just my legs. My arms were fine, they were actually more than fine as I had a railing in front of me I could support my elbows on. I just don't do well standing for long periods of time.

Oh, OK, yeah, I have that problem too, but even worse is sitting for a long time....I can't move too well once I get up...arthur-itis is a real pain...wish he'd go away.

Speaking of pain, just got home from having my shoulder MRI, that was soooo uncomfortable.Anyway, it appears I may not last till March before needing surgery on this shoulder. Now to figure out a way to shoot one handed.

Not at the colesium.....that place is goofy and a monopod would get me killed
Basically it really won't work there.
However I'm thinking ahead to when I have surgery, and setting up on a tripod with remote to fire the camera. It would have to be up highso no one runs into it. That would limit where I could shoot and what I could shoot too.

who knows why I find goalie shots so fun. I guess I just like the crazy positions they go into. Now that I look at it though, the last one looks a tad UE.

Great shots! Where were you sitting for these shots? Some of them look like they were taken from the seats looking over the glass.

After going to the SJ Sharks game tonite, I've decided that my goal is to be a Ice Hockey photog for an NHL team.

yeah, we have one walkway that leads up to the press room, and that walkway is given an unobstructed view of the ice. No glass or nets in front of it. Those are what the 2 last shots are from. me and a couple other photographers camped out there a good portion of the game. There were also holes in the glass right under us though, for photographers. I'm still a bit sketchy about the whole shooting through a hole thing. What if the puck shoots astray and just happens to come in contact with your lens?

SW's right, insurance. The only problem SW is that here we have very few companies willing to insure camera gear. Unlike England it's pretty hard to find good insurance at a reasonable price. When I do a search for photographers insurance I always get a bunch of companies in the UK, 1 or 2 here.

Very shortly I am going to do a thread on t his very subject. First I want to find out if they will pay off on my destroyed rental though.

Oh lord, I'm in so much trouble. I thought you told me the weight of the 1D helped with balance making it easier to shoot with. My shoulder is still killing me from football season with my Rebel!

Livin, I think your shots are great! I'm with you on the 2nd pic. I love everything about it, especially where the puck is.

Yeah, it takes getting used to, and some may need a monopod due to the weight, yes, I said that.
You should try it with a torn rotator cuff...OUCH!!!! And I wonder why I can't sleep at night

How do you get the exposure against the white ice?
Do you use a grey card, or do you under-expose from the camera metering?

i shoot manually, then review shot and check histogram. I generally overexpose about 1-2 stops to make up for camera metering. If you shoot facing the bench area you can get more accurate readings, because the darkness of the bench cancels out the brightness of the ice.

Thanks Brent, useful to know that as a starting point.
Seems it's pretty much the same as in photographing snow scenes.
