    Hip Check...

Well, it looks like I will be shooting more sports after all. I won't be getting paid for all of it, but then I am not expected to give my school any of the action shots I take as well. They're only paying me to do headshots and team shots, but they're allowing me to keep my access to the sporting events. I know they are telling me the truth when they said they hadn't budgeted for photography.

So tonight I went the MCHA Tournament Semi-finals. Marian played against Finlandia and had a thrilling overtime victory. It was a very rough game, and this image that I am posting is just one example of that.

I'll post more on it on Monday or Tuesday when I get through all the images from this game and tomorrow's championship game against MSOE.

Great shot, Sean! When I first looked at it, I thought it was a mishap between two members of the same team. Then, once I managed to separate the two I realized they were on separate teams (blue home, blue away).

Care to share any of the technical details of the shot?

    Well done catching this one.
It's easy for the action to go out of the frame if you zoom in too tight.
Just enough blur to see some of the movement, judging by this sized verson.

Great catch on the action. I have never even seen a hockey game, but would love to shot this kind of action some time. Hey and about the school and not getting paid, you may have a blessing in away. You get access to do what you really want to do shot action sports and more by doing it, but you don't have the pressure of producing shots that the boss wants everytime out. Enjoy it and the opportunity for more bucks will come your way soon.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

Nice catch masdog! And one of those rare instances that not having a puck in the shot works (you knew I'd go there )
The best hip check I have seen in the past 5 years was in girls basketball game....it's becoming a lost art though in hockey.

Thanks, OT. I will enjoy it as much as I can. And it isn't a total loss. If I do give the school any images, I can use the media guides as part of my portfolio or on my resume. Plus I am getting paid for the headshots and team shots that I am taking. Its definitely a start.

I have also kicked around the idea of starting my own sports website to cover college sports in my area. The local newspaper only runs press releases of Marian sports, and the school paper basically lifts from the press releases for its articles. I figure if the other schools in the conference have their own radio sportscasts or websites, we need something that actually reports on the school sports. Plus advertising revenue might allow me to make a little money on the side.

I knew you would go there. That's why I posted this one.

Hip checks are becoming a lost art. So are open-ice hits.

    Beautiful capture here, Masdog!

And some of the best shots in the history of sports don't have a puck or a ball of any kind in them. It's a matter of capturing the fire and intensity of the sport in the photograph that is incredibly important.
