    High School Lacrosse

These are my first attempt at lacrosse. The second shot was an experiment - I slowed the shutter to 1/30 and panned with the action.

    Re: High School Lacrosse

Whoa, Canonfan, I totally posted here a while ago and its not here anymore...does that happen? Wierd.

the first one is great, I think you should crop the 2 players tighter....I think the goalie in the background is distracting and takes away from the real action in the image.

The second one, I can see a lot of people saying its too out of focus but for some reason I like it....A magazine probably wouldnt use it but the player might think its cool. Its like the subject is just focused enough to be isolated from the rest of the blurred players to give it a sense of impact.....

Good stuff for a first attempt! Keep at it, Lets see more!

craftgirl, you're fine.... The post you first responded to was in "General Critique" - I totally forgot about the "Sports" forum and I posted them here, too.

I appreciate your input - I thought about cropping out the goalie but thought it helped with showing the urgency of the defender.

The second one was purposely blurred with a slow shutter to try capturing the speed of the game.

    Re: High School Lacrosse

I think the slow shutter speed is a little too slow because the face looks soft.
I feel that there should be something that is sharp.
When they're running, catching anything still enough to be sharp is a bonus

This is the 3rd time of posting.
    Each time something's gone wrong.
Latest was "poooooowwww" and the computer just stopped.
Power supply failure, or perhaps commanded to switch off.
But *I* didn't tell it to ... and I just replaced a totally dead PSU last week.

craftgirl - I mostly shoot softball and Little League baseball (my kids) but had the opp to shoot lacrosse yesterday. I used to shoot a lot of men's softball back in the 80's as well as boat racing - mainly Jersey Speed Skiffs.

cool. I have not ventured into boat racing yet (which is weird since I live near Annapolis) Lots of sail boat racing and well just boats in general. I am shooting a lot of soccer right now and of course the Nascar...

    Re: High School Lacrosse

i applaud your effort with the slow shutter speed. I've only ever seen a couple panned lax images I really liked though, both with IS on a long telephoto. Panning with lacrosse is hard because you can't really get focus on the face most of the time because the players like to bob their head when they are really going full steam down the field. But if they are jogging you may get more luck. If you don't have IS it's really all about luck, and how many frames you can shoot without getting frustrated. I shot a quarter of a soccer game once with about 150 frames at 1/6-1/8 and got 2 usable ones.
