Head of the Charles Advice

The Head of the Charles event is this weekend and I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to how I should approach photographing this event and events like this in general. I'm a newbie so normally I approach these things and just photograph anything and everything. Wondering if this is what others do or is there some element of planning that I should take with me?

Ok, you got me... what kind of event is it? Being in Indiana I have no clue so I can't give you any ideas.
