Grass track speedway - a first attempt

As a grasstrack speedway virgin (until today), here are some images of motorcycles with no brakes travelling at high speeds through dust!

What is the purpose of the guys hanging off the side? And how do they stop without brakes?
Drink Coffee. Do stupid things faster with more energy.

Well Kelly, it is all very odd I have to agree.

It seems that the guy in the sidecar hangs off the side to stop the bike flipping over when they go round a bend.

And... at the end of the race they just free-wheel to a halt! It can take them the best part of a lap to stop!

    Bizarre.

Excellent shots, but number 3 does it for me, you really feel that you are amongst the action.

What shutter speed were you using for these shots? It looks like you had it perfect.

The guys is called the monkey... I have see side car racing at Laguna but never on the dirt. It is pretty interesting/crazy to see them come down the corkscrew at ungodly speeds.

Nice shots. You got yourself in good position to take what looks to be some difficult shots. What were you using?

Thanks for all your comments. I didn't know the guy in the sidecar was called a monkey - you learn something new every day!

I was shooting with a 1D MKII, 300mm f/2.8 with 1.4 extender. The panning shot was at 1/160s, f/5.6 at 50asa and the other shots at 1/1000s, f/4 at 200ASA.
