Football slideshow help

I am suppose to do an “end of the year” football slideshow with music at a banquet in 6 weeks and I have a problem with slideshow CD’s. I have been using a Canon S2IS at super high resolution for the pictures, which look fantastic. With the CD burning slideshow I bought it burnt it at VCD. The pictures looked horrible! It said use SVCD for better resolution but I would have to download a SVCD player to see it.
Is SVCD really any good??
What do you all suggest for a “All in one” CD to give to anyone to view these pictures with music in a presentation that they can use without having to download programs to run?

I once did a slideshow using powerpoint and the images turned out quite well.

yeah, pp works quite well. I was very happy with it when I used it for my indoor track team.
