    First Time

Okay, I have been talked into showing my first attempt at shooting my son's football game last weekend. Let me see if I can post these pictures correctly. Let me know if I do it wrong, and give me your comments.....I am up for any and all suggestions...the first two are unedited, then I played with them some...:blush2:

    Thank you

    Re: First Time

Betty, you've got some really good timing there!

Somewhere on this board are some good tips on how to pan properly. That's one thing I'd start with first, or at least that's how I started. One new project at every game.

What mode are you shooting in?

    Re: First Time

Thank you so much......I have read some posts on panning...but haven't really tried it yet. I really just focused on being somewhere on the sidelines to try and get something...LOL
And not follow in your footsteps.....that is all I could think of standing on the sidelines....dear lord don't let them come this way....LOL....

All kidding aside....I hope you are doing okay
And thank you for being so kind...

    Re: First Time

First off, isn't it great being along the sidelines of a football game, "Best seats in the house".

A few things. In the first shot it looks like your focus point is off. It appears to be on the two players (green) on either side of the runner. With panning you need to follow the action and shoot while the camera pans with the action. Don't forget to follow-through. In other words as you pan the camera and take a picture, keep following the action as you shoot and after you shoot.

You did a good with the second and third shot. Their both very sharp, but could use a tighter crop. In the second one you have the #10 getting ready for the hit by #7. I would crop out that empty space along the left and top portion of the picture. The last one could go two ways. You could crop tight on the Kicker and holder, or you can do a horizontal crop including some of #12, to indicate the rush.

    Re: First Time

Thank you Homer, I did do some editing on these pictures, and did some of the things you suggested. But figured I would get better ideas from you guys with the original pics.

I have a lot to learn about panning that is for sure.....that must be one of those things you have to practice...practice...practice...and with the football season ending soon, I guess I will be doing the practicing during basketball....

If I keep posting, I hope you guys will keep giving me input....I need all the help I can get.
    Especially on manual settings.....

    Thanks again

    Re: First Time

If your able, go to some track meets, which will be coming up soon and practice panning with the runners. This will give you a lot of practice and some new techniques, such as adding some motion blur.

    Re: First Time

We are a small school, and don't have track, or soccer. I live in the boonies, LOL, I am from the Eastern Shore of Virginia and anything I want or need for my camera I have to order or go across the bay to Virginia Beach. Which is a bummer.

I see what you are saying though, and if I have the opportunity to go to a meet somewhere else I will try that. My son goes from football, to basketball, to golf. So I guess they are the things I am focusing on right now. I will keep reading all I can and trying new settings on the camera and see what I get....

Thanks again....I need all the help I can get...
