Picture of my daughter pitching for her 14U team at thier first scrimmage. Cold overcast day. Can't wait for summer to get here!

Not a bad start there, not much you can do to stop action in those conditions. I'd probably shoot from the front (through fence) and the other side though. This works good if the pitcher gets to make a throw to first base.

I had the same fence problem yesterday! I did exactly what you recommended JS! Now I feel smart...lol 'cept there were a mess of people clogging up the background on that side....couldnt win!

over cast days are some of my favorite days to shoot! I like the contrasty-ness. and you can always pop color further in pp.....

You have made a great start! Practice practice! I take my camera to my son's practices to practice too....when I get bored of soccer i can run over to the next field and shoot a little baseball....i love it!

That was where I wanted to shoot from, but my wife thought it would be a distraction. And my mistake, this was taken while she was pitching for the high school team in thier scrimmage. The 14U scrimmage was the next day. I will try from that side this weekend if the rain holds off. Right now the field is underwater so it does not look hopeful..

Well show your wife that picture and next time shoot from where you want to shoot and show her those. Also that picture is a tad bit dark, try lowering your F/stops and Shutter Speed. If you can talk your wife into it, the 80-200 F/2.8 lens would work great for you shooting SB.

    Speaking of lenses

I have been holding out for the new Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 lens. Local Camera guy thought it would be a good one for softball as well as swimming (indoors).

Any thoughts on that vs 80-200 you mention?

Re: First SB scrimmage of the year

I love my 80-200, I don't know anything about the tamron. I bought mine used, it is an older model. It is a single ring model, the newer ones are double ring (not that it really matters), I paid about 500 bucks for it, and unlike the tamron I have the security of knowing if something ever happens to it I can send it into Nikon for repair.

the only difference in the 70-200 and the nikon I have is the 10mm you'll lose from 70-80 which I don't think is that big of a deal.

Here are some images I took with my baby.
