First Round Ball of the Season

This was my first outing of the season to shoot basketball. My nephew's 8th grade game was something of a run away victory but still fun to get back on the sidelines for a few shots. All these were shot with the D700 at ISO 4000 with a shutter speed of 1/500 and f 2.8.

Re: First Round Ball of the Season

#22 didn't learn the first time he almost took a knee to the chin?

To have to go ISO 4000 to get 1/500 reminds me why I don't want to shoot middle school here but I may end up doing it with flash once or twice this year (they have to request, I'm not shooting in that gym otherwise!) I haven't tried the 50D over 3200 yet and don't have to in most gyms unless I end up in the middle schools, so I want to avoid it if possible ;)

I wish my local high school had this good of light. No way I can get this same quality at ISO 4000 there. That place is like shooting in a cave at mid-night.

Ah yes, BB in the Bluegrass! Great shots as usual Larry. I plan to shoot a Middle School game tomorrow night. Football is fun but BB is my favorite. No rain, mud, cold, etc. I'll try to post a couple from that game.

Thanks for the look and the comment. I'll look forward to seeing some from you Daniel. Didn't you guys have a high school consolidation down your way?

Wow, ISO 4000. I don't dare go above 1000 on my Mark IIN for fear of noise. Nice snaps as always.

Thanks Chris. I'm getting more and more confidence in the D700 above the traditional taboo of going above 1600.

Are you doing any noise reduction on these snaps?

Chris I have a small amount of Noise Ninja applied on the four I posted. However I was very pleased with the results with out it. Noise reduction just kind of smoothed out the backgrounds and shadow areas. I should also add that these are all cropped somewhat. The last one is at least a 50% crop and the others somewhere around 25%. I think the noise reduction is most evident on the last one.

PS: Just went back and checked the file and I have no NR on the first shot but do have on the other three.

Yes, they did consolidate our 2 HS into a single one this year. Against the wishes of most folks in the county, they hired Reggie Warford (former UK player) as the head coach rather than the coach from the North HS who averaged 20+ wins per season for 13 years. The new coach will be scrutinized heavily this year. He has some good players returning though so I'm interested to see how it goes.

Good luck with the consolidation. I know a lot of people will miss the excitement of the rivalry games.
