    Re: First Night Game SOS...

I know that poor lighting can sometimes be an issue in night games, but use a shutter speed of 1/500th or faster whenever possible. The additional graininess (or noise) you'll get by switching to a faster ISO will not be as detrimental to your images as the blur you'll get on the faster moving players and the ball when you shoot at a lower ISO and a slower shutter speed.

Also, if your camera allows you to set the white balance by metering off a white object, take a white towel or t-shirt with you and do so. While you can always correct the white balance later, why do so if you can get it right the first time?

    Good luck and have fun

Although I use flash for night FB games, if you are intent on shooting available light I would recommend using auto WB as the lights usually cycle with the power frequency. I only shoot manual, but if you intend to use one of the auto modes I would suggest aperture priority at f2.8, ISO 1600 (or higher if you have it) to get the fastest shutter speed possible.

Betty you are too good a photographer to get stressed about a night football game. You know your equipment and it's capabilities. Low light football fields are a pain in the ____. But they are a reality for every high school sports photographer. Go out and apply the knowledge you have gained over the last several months and come back with hand full of good images. They are not all going to be award winners we all except that fact but some will be. If conditions are terrible with the light, don't be afraid to pull out the speed light. Try to balance your light so that the flash is not over powering and get your shots when the action in coming to you, it's not going to do much good when the play is on the other side of the field and the actions is moving away from you.

Take a deep breath and enjoy yourself. That's what this whole photography thing is, it's having FUN!
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

    Re: First Night Game SOS...

I shoot night football at ISO 800, aperture priority at f2.8 with my Canon 550EX speedlight at ETTL at maybe one half to one full stop overexposure, depending on which hashmark the team is on and how far downfield I am. Granted, this won't work for everyone but I've experimented for a couple of years with it and this works best for me. There's alot of good shooters on here so try to find some common ground to use as a starting point then make your own adjustments. Good luck!
