Feels good to to be back in the saddle

That I actually went out for a ride...and first time in even a longer time that I took my gear with me. Forgot what it is like to ride with that much weight on me Surprised

Had a new trail open up near our house so I went out there with a friend to try it out and see about taking a few photos.

Still trying to figure out exposing photos properly with off camera flash. I seem to either always have to dark a background or I'm blowing the rider out with my flash. Gotta really get out and just do some practice one of these days.

    A few photos:

    Here's the problem.
If I can get past the auto URL recognition...

    h t t p : // h t t p // http://www.theharaldsons.com/images/...n/murphy01.jpg

I put spaces in to prevent the site getting clever.
You have both http:// and http// in front of the proper url.
So the images will never be found 'coz it's just not valid.

Leave the http:// take out the http// and it ought to work...

That last photo is sweet. It takes a while to get a feel for how to use the off-camera flash. I remember being frustrated. It may seem obvious, but make sure to expose for your background separately. In the woods, you'll always be fighting with very slow shutter speeds. There's no way around it. Off-camera flash doesn't fix the background light for you. Photoshop and masked adjustment layers make a big difference for me.

Yeah I was exposing for the background and then trying to dial in the light to get the right exposure for the rider. I find myself more often than not getting to hot on the rider. I think I might be putting the flash a bit to close to the rider at times. Here in Minnesota the worst part is dancing around trying to keep the skeeters off ya while ya change settings

Got any links on tutorials dealing with masked adjustment layers? I can't say I do any of that. I'm more of a history brush guy, going back and saving previous information after making adjustments. Seems when I'm back in the woods I always end up using the shadow/highlight tool a little bit here and there.

SHUT UP! SOMEONE MIGHT HEAR YOU!!

Dude... just when you think things are gonna get easier, the @#$^ hits the fan...

I'm actually about to bite the bullet and hand it off to a buddy of mine to do with as he wishes. I just don't have the time, especially with going back to school and starting to do more 3D work.

#4 stands out for me, I like the log ride. So are setting up big strobes for your lighting ?

Thanks Jimmy. These were shot with a Canon 1ds and a 17-40 f4. For light I used a single Canon 550 connected with a set of Powerwizard Plus II's.

Riding with the 1ds is a bit of a pain in the back but it's my only body that is full frame and I love it dearly for that. I picked up a LowePro DryZone rover for riding with my gear and it's the best bag I've used yet. All your gear is stored down at the bottom so if you hit a low tree with it you don't risk any of your gear...not to mention it is waterproof so you can keep the a waterpack in the upper section.
