My favorite shot from this year's NHRA Nationals held last weekend in Indianapolis.

Pretty good for 1/100 second at night.
Tough call to expose more for the flames and darken the track, or let the track come up to mid-grey and blow out the flames.
At 1/100 there wouldn't be much structure to the flame (too slow shutter speed for that) so I reckon you made the right choice.
