    College Women's Hockey

Some from this afternoon (and yes, I know it's 3 am as I post this and head off to bed), NCAA D1 Minnesota Duluth hosting Bemidji State

    1. 5 year high school star here, playing college hockey 3 hours away (shot b4 I remembered to shoot the ice for CWB!)

    2. I didn't care that it was a tiny bit off focus, it's always about the eyes with her

    3. Another of our locals who went to that school to play, being chased by a Duluth native playing FOR Minnesota-Duluth

    4. Yes, it DID roll over the line completely

    5. The mascot, 1 fan per weekend shoots foam pucks at him/her and the end of the season the person with the most goals wins a prize, I couldn't get this one to really work that well in neat image.. must be the furry costume

In this arena I always have to overexpose the ice or the cycling of lights makes every picture completely different regardless of the CWB. Also need to get the shutter up to 1/800 or the college game moves too fast at times. I get away with 1/640 for the high school girls game.

I am new to the site and to using dslr's, when you said you forgot to shoot the ice for the first picture .......what does CWB.......I know the WB is white balance but what does the C stand for? Also when you say shoot the ice you mean meter it correct? To do that you just point the camera at the ice in either center or spot metering and then hit the exposure lock button right?
    Great pictures by the way.

    Re: College Women's Hockey

CWB=Custom White Balane to me.. just a shortcut.. I shoot the "dirty" pre-zamboni (and unpainted spot of course) ice at 1/400 manual focus so I get an out of focus shot on purpose if I can get 1/800 SS and set the white balance to custom using that ice shot to tell the camera what the ice/lights are doing. In the college arena I sometimes have to do it 2 or 3 times to get it right because of really crappy lights, the camera will sometimes say correct WB cannot be found with this image (or something like that) so I do it again.

I don't do the gray card (or white piece of paper either) route for hockey since there's 180 feet of white to shoot and it just works faster, can get there almost at game time if I have to and not deal with anything but taking the lens cap off.

In our high school gym for basketball I actually have to use the 50D's fluorescent setting, nothing else looks right.
