    College Football

Sorry I haven't been around. It's my busy time. I just finished doing over 400 football portraits. Now I get to do my love. Action football.

From my son's college game. One of the best players I've ever shot on the high school level is now playing with my son again at college. He got the first touchdown of the season.

HS team-mates reunited to celebrate on the college level.

Hey, haven't seen you in a while. Welcome back. Nice basic, action snaps. The whites in the first snap are a tad bright but overall, good exposure, color and sharp images.
As a sidebar, I just saw your gear list under your signature. Holy canoli, mostacolli. Why not dump one of those bodies and put the sheckles toward a 300 2.8L. They're great for high school and college field sports.

Thanks Fidgety. Any advice on the whites. I don't see it, but that doesn't mean anything. lol

My Mark III is going to be sold after a visit to Canon as well as my 24-105L to off offset the Mark IV.

I'd love the 300mm, but don't know if it's too much weight for me to handle. I detest monopods.

Anyway, please feel free to offer me some advice on my whites. Thank you!

Although fidgety is my screen name, you can call me Chris. Come on, you gotta get a 300! Yeah, they're heavy but they're great.

On my monitor the whites in the first snap appear a bit overexposed and lacking detail. The ball carrier is exposed well but maybe you can compensate a tad so the ball carrier is exposed nicely but the whites have a nice exposure to them as well. It's kind of a pain when shooting teams in dark and white jerseys but if it was easy, anyone could do it.

Thanks Chris. I'm going to have to go back and look at the original because I bet I may have lightened too much in the first one. Now I see where it IS lighter than the others. Do you use awb when shooting football in the day?

I dream of the 300mm because of the shots I see (mainly yours). However, I'm not that big and just not sure it's something I'd wield well.

Buying the Mark IV wasn't my plan, so now I need put money back from the Mark IV purchase. I swear most of what I make goes back into equipment!

If it's partly cloudy I'll use AWB when shooting daytime football but if it's sunny I'll use the daylight balance.

Nice stuff as always Julie. I'm with Chris on that 300 f2.8, as you are aware there is nothing like good glass to get you those shots that have avoided you in the past. But i know what you mean about the $$$ good long glass is expensive. As for the weight just do a few more push ups each morning and suck it up for the good of the photographs.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

No kidding! I usually use a monopod with mine when I shoot field sports but last night I shot volleyball from up in a balcony and handheld the thing and I can really feel it this morning. Ugh!

I only have a 300 f4 but I use a monopod with it most of the time. Since I'm shooting a full frame camera if I have the light like I did in the first quarter of the football game Friday night I attach a 1.4 multiplier the monopod helps out with extra length as well.

I'll add the 300 to my xmas list, but I think Santa is going to laugh!

One of the guys from a paper always hand holds his 300 f/2.8 . I don't know why I find this so impressive. Maybe I should ask for some weights before I ask for the lens. Oh and CASH. lol

The 300 is hand-holdable as I did it for a while but was having arm soreness and back trouble so I switched to a monopod. I think age might of had something to do with it as well : )
