    Camera question

Noy sure if this is the appropriate category but since I shoot mainly my kids sports, thought I'd ask here:

I have shot with a Canon 40d w/ 70-200 2.8 and 1.4 tele for about a year. I am still learning the post shot tweaking, but will say I rarely have to modify the brightness. About a week ago, I came into a d300 and I then rented a 70-200mm to try out. The pictures seem to be more over exposed and I have had to adjust the brightness down quite a bit. Is this common? ( I will say that I did not really set a custom program)

    Re: Camera question

How do you find the Nikon in comparison to the Canon?
I know you're not comparing equivalent cameras, but the feel, ease of use etc.

I was going to say I found it in the EXIF information.

    # Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 10/16000 second = 1/1600 second = 0.00063 second
    # Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 32/10 = F3.2
    # Exposure Program = aperture priority (3)
    # ISO Speed Ratings = 200
    # Exif Version = 0221
    # Original Date/Time = 2008:10:04 14:08:26
    # Digitization Date/Time = 2008:10:04 14:08:26
    # Components Configuration = 0x01,0x02,0x03,0x00 / YCbCr
    # Compressed Bits per Pixel = 4/1 = 4
    # Exposure Bias (EV) = 4/6 = 0.67
    # Max Aperture Value (APEX) = 30/10 = 3
    Max Aperture = F2.83
    # Metering Mode = center weighted average (2)
    # Light Source / White Balance = unknown (0)
    # Flash = Flash did not fire
    # Focal Length = 1160/10 mm = 116 mm

While the EV might have been set for + 2/3, keep in mind that they are wearing black uniforms. Since you're set for center-weighted metering, the camera will try to make those black tops medium-grey, thus ramping up the exposure and giving you results just like what you're seeing. Just throwing it out there.

How do you see the EXIF data for posed images? Download and view in PictureProject?

    Wombat

I only had the weekend with the Nikon and 70-200. I liked the feel and balance of the combo a little better than the Canon. I found the Nikon much more complex to figure out w/o the manual. I had to refer to it often over the weekend. I'm sure the difference is a year of using the Canon vs. 2 days on the Nikon. All in all, I think if I did not own the Canon lenses I do, I would opt to keep the Nikon.

    Re: Camera question

I found the Nikon fitted my hand very well, I liked it better than the Canon.
But the position of the control wheel on the front edge just didn't suit me at all.
Canon's positioning on the top to near the shutter release was far easier for me to use.
I also found the Canon menus easier to use, and the rear controls (on the 20D joystick and wheel like the 1DmkIII) fell to hand nicely.
A very minor issue was the manual focus on Nikon lenses is opposite to every lens I've ever used before. I was expecting to use AF a lot so it wasn't a consideration.

    yeah - what you said!

I agree on the menus - definately more user friendly on the Canon.
