    Bowl session

Annie Sullivan rides for Osiris Shoes and Sector 9 skateboards. I teamed up with her this weekend for some photos. Here is one from today. Hope you enjoy, please C&C.

Cool shot Dave, great job dealing with the backlight. Was this all natural light? Looks like there's light coming in from both ends of this tunnel.

Nice shot. I would've like to see less dof. Why did you shoot this at f10?

I agree with the DOF but it is a great shot!

Good questions all around. I actually had to use two flashes aiming at Annie and the backlight to sort of "balance" it out. It was so bright, that to get my camera down to synch speed I needed to bump the f-stops up a bit.

I may choose to re-shoot this with some afternoon sunset throwing golden light into the tube. I think that may come out better.

Well that makes perfect sense. Doesn't that body go down to ISO 50 though? That'll open it up 2 stops right there.

I hate it when I have to stop down to use the flash. That's one thing I really liked about the first EOS-1D - 1/500th second flash sync. I don't think many people realize how valuable that actually is. This photo is a very good example.

Did you use a polarizer to bring down your exposure?

Hey John! I really miss the 1/500th synch speed from my 1DMKI! I didn't use a polarizer, becuase that would have also reduced the lighting of the flash getting into the camera. I already had flashes set at 1/1 and the other at 1/4 (ish).

I stopped down and metered from the inside of the pipe. I tried to get an exposure with the sky was not completely blown out and had some detail - even though the sky was 100% overcast and slightly raining.
