Australian Rules Football - South Adelaide Vs Glenelg

    Hi,

I want to seriously improve my non motorsport action photos, so I headed off to a local Australian Rules game today, South Adelaide V Glenelg (they are part of the SANFL, one of the feeder leagues into the AFL). The A100 did struggle a bit at times, but regardless, I still think I managed a few keepers & hopefully my skills will also improve! These shots were taken with a minolta 75-300 f4.5-5.6 "New":

    Australian Rules Football?
    This game has rules?
I watched it out in Sydney back in the '80s, I think you had to hand back any eyes gouged out after the game, but that was about it.

What I think is missing is what makes it different from other games.
The handball (Gaeilic football handpass?) for a start, get the ball coming off the fist.
The fierceness of the tackles is awesome, how about seeing that?
Some real body contact, no padding, no armour, just flesh & bone.
And for the kick, can you get ball on boot?
Or even ball just leaving the boot?
How about someone jumping and taking a mark?
Oh and scoring a goal or behind, what other game needs 8 goalposts?
    How about the bounce?

    Paul,

This game has very specific and complex rules. I will try to simplify them for you.

Rule #1. Try to survive intact to the end of the game.

Rule #2. Any questions, refer back to rule #1.

    That's it, rule book closed.

Damn I miss the game. Used to be shown on ESPN when I came to the states in 90.

I think he might be suggesting that I try & take different photos of the game.

At the moment, its a building exercise. I had a low rate of keepers for the day, but that being said, the more I go out, the better I will become!

    Cheers

Yeah, I guessed you showed the best - and the action doesn't happen just where we want it to, does it ?

You've got good backrounds, distractions well blurred, but apart from the guernseys instead of rugby shirts I couldn't be sure in many photos what you were shooting.
I think the key to a different, unusual sport (for the audience anyway) is to show the unique aspects.
