    8th Grade B-ball at ISO 4000

I shot my nephew 8th grade basketball teams last home game last night. His team is 31-1 on the season after last night and over the last two season have compiled a 54-1 a record. These were all shot with the Nikon D700 at ISO 4000 with a shutter speed of 1/500 and aperture of f2.8. Most are at least a 50% crop and have had a tad of Neat Image applied.

All very nice action snaps. A tad noise here and there but very minimal.

I can live with that kind of noise at ISO 4000 and a 50% crop. The poor guy beside me was shooting at ISO 1600 and had golf ball noise in his shots. I do love the D700 it has opened up a lot of venues for me that I was never able to get acceptable images in.

I can only dream shooting at ISO 4000...my poor Oly barely handles an ISO 800 LOL.

    Great pics OT.

Golf ball sized noise? Hey, that's what I get on my 1D when shooting at ISO 1600! Actually, it's not that bad for newsprint as once in the newspaper they never look that great anyway. If I was doing event shooting for people to buy prints then 1600 hurts sales as most prints of any size don't look too good.

Thanks BlueRob. Most of my cameras in the past have been the same above 800 and it was any bodies guess what you would get. But the D700 does a great job at the higher ISO ratings.

I agree. Some of the stuff I use to get away with when I was shooting film for the newspaper wouldn't hack it for commercial sale for sure. Standards are a lot different today and people expect a lot more from us. The new technology is allowing us to full fill their expectations.

Nice shots Larry! The 700 has been good for you for sure. I like the D300s noise tendencies pretty good but I have to watch the in-camera settings to get clean shots above 1600. Even with the new sensors, you have to watch exposure. If it's underexposed the noise will be worse even with the best cameras.

You are exactly right Daniel, it is still critical to get a properly exposed image. No amount of PS or Neat Image will save it if you grossly under expose to start with.

Me Too!! Me Too!!! I wish that a D3S were in my near future but I'm afraid it will be a while before I can make that investment. I friend just bought one and is loving it. But it is still just in my dreams.

Thanks Dawn. I really prefer shooting basketball with available light but so many gyms are poorly lighted that it's a real challenge. The D700 has opened up a lot of venues to me.
