I have two questions on posting

First, is how can you post more than five pictures in a single post?

Second, how do you post words between picture so you can tell about each photo?

I am sure there is more people than myself that would like to know the answers to these questions but just haven't ask. Thanks, Jeff

Re: I have two questions on posting

I'll tackle the second part. "Second, how do you post words between picture so you can tell about each photo?"

Upload Photos (max 800/293k) as normal. Close the pop up box. Where the image files are now listed below the text box (just above the Upload Photos button), right click and view the Properties. At the top of the Properties box, you will see something like,

    attachmentid=75451&stc=1&d=1263049798

You want the first number (75451 in this case).

Wherever you want the image in your post, add:

[ attach]75451[ /attach] (leave out the spaces before attach)

You can then add text and attach the next image. They usually are consecutive, but you can always check the properties of each.

[ attach]75452[ /attach] (leave out the spaces before attach)

You can attach them in any order; not necessarily the order uploaded. Preview Post also includes the images if attached.

For the first part about more than 5 images, I haven’t done it for more than 5, but I would guess that you could upload them to the Gallery and then reference them as [img]URL[/img]. I guess you could also do this to get text in between. Also, you are not limited to 800/293k files.

I wouldn't like that. If you want big pictures, use the Gallery.
The forums should be designed for web viewing and interaction, where the 800x800 restriction makes sense to stop the web page getting too large to view on most monitors.

Used to be a 640 restriction I think, but with the increase in size of monitors as prices dropped putting it up to 800 made sense.

I wouldn't want people to start posting lots and lots of images, either.
Five is a reasonable amount, and you can always reply to your own post and attach another 5 in the next message.

But I have found a very sneaky way to do the attachments.

Not advocating the larger size, merely reporting. I do use it occasionally when I think an image needs the size for presentation.

BTW, the non-photography sister site, RoadBikeReview.com, allows jpg files of 1100 pixels and 585.5KB. The posts are also shown on a light gray background instead of white, though too light of a gray to really matter. A neutral gray background is something I would like to see with future revisions of this site.

Then if P-J can get the elves in the back room to make similar changes, I'd agree with having a darker background.
Actually I'd like to see a choice of background colours for the attachment section.
But that would make embedding photos inline with the text less use, as they'd be on the white background

Re: I have two questions on posting

The most common way people are posting more than 5 photos is by linking to them. If you upload your photos to the gallery, flickr, photobucket etc. you can then link to them by using the insert image icon on the top of your message window. It's the little yellow box with a mountain in it. By doing this, you can put the photos anywhere you want in the post and add text between them.

Go to a photo in your gallery and right click on it, then select Copy Image Location. Then in your message, click on the insert image box and past that location into the pop up window.

Once the link is in your post, you can continue typing below it and add more linked photos. You will also notice that there isn't a box around the photos like there is if you upload them directly to your post.

Re: I have two questions on posting

To provide an alternate answer to your question Jeff, and to perhaps solve some of the size issues, I use a hosting service. My current favorite is Imageshack (http://imageshack.us/), though I've also used Photobucket in the past.

Once you upload an image, Imageshack generates several codes to use the image in forums, on websites, in e-mails, etc. A simple click of an icon makes any image private and unviewable (for those of us concerned about theft).

Once the codes are generated, it's a simple copy and paste. What you see when you're creating the post is a link. What you see when you submit the post is the image itself. This allows you to continue typing (and posting more links, if you wish).

The free version of Imageshack has a 5mb upload limit, which should be more than enough for forum purposes. For those images (or questions) requiring a larger view, one of the code options places a thumbnail size image in the post itself, and that thumbnail can then be clicked to link back to the full-size image. Here's an example:

The biggest downside to Imageshack is that you have a lot of options, and it takes some time to sort out which link you want to use when. However, previewing the post generally allows you to sort this out. I really like the flexibility Imageshack gives me, and the fact that I can upload one image for use in several different places.

Re: I have two questions on posting

Thanks everyone for helping me out on this. More than likely I won't want or need to post over five picture at a time. The text between the pictures was the important thing to me. Thanks everyone for helping me learn something new. I ended up using Mike's method and it works well for me. I just needed to first click on the picture in the gallery first to make it bigger before copying it to post it in the thread. Thanks to all who helped me out with this, Jeff

I think I have it  Thanks again PAul, OldClicker, Mike and Joe

Re: I have two questions on posting

It doesn't work that way for gallery images, the forum uses the http instead of img if you pick the wrong link to try and show.

Yours didn't work, because you picked up the wrong link.
As I hover over your http: link I see this http: //gallery.photographyreview.com/showphoto.php?photo=146927&cat=500&ppuser=235128

Which is the wrong link. This is a link to a web page (php) and not to the image itself.
The ? means send parameters to the prorgram, photo= for the image number, & for the next parameter cat= which is the category, and &ppuser= for the user gallery ID.

Yet this link of Mike's worked.
    [ IMG]http://gallery.photographyreview.com/data/photography//500/medium/IMG_9762.jpg[/IMG]

The trick is knowing which one is going to work!
It's not the link in the address bar at the top of the browser.
    http ://gallery.photographyreview.com/showphoto.php?photo=146927&cat=500&ppuser=235128

What you need is to go to that page and right-click on the image adn then save the link to that image.
    http ://gallery.photographyreview.com/data/photography//500/medium/DSC_5085.jpg

That should allow you paste it in the image tags and it'll work like this
    [ IMG]http://gallery.photographyreview.com/data/photography//500/medium/DSC_5085.jpg[/IMG]

    Grandpaw's image above, not mine!

There is a reason why the site makes it simple to attach photos.
Doing it the other way by editing the html yourself is hard to get right.

Cancel isn't necessary. Nothing is posted until you hit submit, so if you change your mind, you can just hit the back button.
