    Featured Photos

I'd like to ask why there aren't featured photos in the Nature and Wildlife and Sports threads. There are a lot of great things being done in both forums, and I really think those two should have their own Featured Photo sections. People who don't ordinarily visit those forums are missing out on some great stuff. The mods seem to concentrate only on Critique for the FP's. Has this subject come up before? I think it would be a great way to recognize some of those people who don't usually post in Critique and stay in the aforementioned forums. JMHO.

Awwww shucks! John, I see that your post was moved from the ViewFinder forum to here. While it makes sense to have it here, I was hoping that your thread would be great advertising for more participation in the NW forum.

Kind of like going from top billing to bottom Curious to see how many views and posts and recommendations you'll get now.

Loup......I'm used to it by now .
There are too many good photos here in all the forums that deserve the accolade. It's a shame that only one photo gets chosen to be the featured photo, and it usually is one chosen from the Critique forum. I think expanding that to other forums gives those particular shooters a chance to be seen and appreciated. I know I'll never have one, but I would love to see some of the recognition be spread to those deserving folks who do.

Loupy just wants more press for his tubes thread and his images as the featured photo.

He will get both if PJ wants to let me do it.

HAHAHA. Paul, as my father would have said (read with a heavy Asian accent) "you funny guy!" I'm glad you have a sense of humor.

(shhhh, there are a couple scattered throughout these boards who I am convinced do not have a drop of humor in them)

Seriously, Paul, I really wanted John's point to help drum up attention "way" down there. I remember when I first joined how long it took me to work my way down there.

Plus, look how much "exposure" your butt generated while it was up-top

Hey I got an idea: with a black sharpie, write "go to sports and NW forums below" on your butt and post that in ViewFinder.

    Re: Featured Photos

Loupey, you've hit it on the head. This is probably the least viewed forum, because it's way down here at the bottom. Maybe they're hoping it'll go away. That's why I posted originally in Viewfinder....maybe others are thinking the same thing I am....why no featured photos in the other forums. Lord knows the mods have enough to do without having to go thru the hassle of setting up that kind of thing in the other forums. Can't blame them I suppose, but I felt it was an honest question/suggestion. Another thing I wonder about is how many photos do they really look at before deciding what is a good FP candidate? Trying to put myself in their shoes, it must be tiring to go thru hundreds of photos each day/week looking for the right one. Of course, they're going to go with the folks who've earned the respect that's due someone with a quality body of work. I think also, that is why those people get more views and comments than others. By making my post, I was hoping that opening up a FP in the Nature and Sports forums, some of the lesser viewed or known photographers would get a boost. Personally, I haven't earned the respect, nor the views and comments because I've posted too many flawed photos, but this isn't about me. I want to see some of the 'glory' spread around to others who deserve it.

    Re: Featured Photos

Ok I've been tracking this thread all day and it's steadly going down hill. Let's just back off Paul butt. If he would have posted it on Critque it would have made Feature Photo for sure. Ah did I just make a point. I think so. I'm for having a feature photo for the other two big photo posting forum also. I've been fortunate and had a couple of mine selected over the years as FP, but I have been much less active on critque the last few months, as I became more involved with the Sports Forum and now the NW forum, so the possiblities are much slimmer now. However I think the main point here is to kind of let photos of a common nature seek there own level. Apples to apples so to speak. I think it encourages people to post more and to have more of a feeling of belonging to the site. Hope this rambling made sense.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

For the record, I make the best effort I can to look through as many photographs I can when I select one.
I am currently stuck in "dial up hell", so it's a little time consuming too!
I sometimes do it at work too!

    Re: Featured Photos

John, I get less responses than you, and probably less "respect", but have a couple FP. I sometimes wonder why a photo was chosen, but it's not my place to say anything about it. FPs in N/W and sports would be great, even if it weren't tied into the archive.

If you base your success on results of a website, you are fooling yourself. The best way to know how you're doing is to get out and show your work, join a camera club, and network with other photographers that are willing to help you improve. If I based my success off this site, I would have stopped long ago. However, when I show locally it's like walking on air, I always feel inspired by the positive comments.

When you sell a print and someone asks you to autograph it, you'll know exactly what I mean. So, stop being so gloomy, and get busy. Show, and if it isn't taken well, refine and show again. Be the "featured" one in your town, community, whatever, and you will learn and grow much faster.

Some of the most successful photographers are just really good Public Relations people, with cameras.

payn....if it sounded like I was gloomy, I'm sorry. Maybe the mood was a little 'down' , but the point was to see if the NW and Sports forums could get their own FP's. As for myself, if I call myself a hack, it's because I haven't had nearly the experience many of you have, so I know it's going to take time. Yeah, I get down on myself, but that wasn't the point here--honestly.

I even promise not to be biased in my picking an image.... well maybe a mediocre image of a good subject or a rarely caught act will win over a beautiful image of a city park duck

I would think that the sports forum would pick a mediocre image of a great catch mid air over a perfect image of a guy riding the bench too

Sports guys know what's hard to capture and I know nature well too.

I will get PJ on this matter AS SOON AS HE GETS BACK IN THE OFFICE!!!!

Certainly understood on the rant. Actually I have had some success of sorts. A baseball card company has used 4 of my submissions for their cards, and I 've been published in a minor league baseball magazine. The transition from sports to other types is a tough one, though. That's why I'm amazed with all the great things I'm seeing, and that's why I think we should have FP's in the other forums.

That seems appropriate, especially if someone took the time to study habitats, behaviors, and track the animal(s).

I'll talk to the respective moderators about this. If there's a problem, it's me. I'm the one juggling too much and slow to act. I think moderators for both forums have approached me about Featured Photos before. There are also design-related issues I have to consider. But I think I feel a plan coming together.

I would be happy if the featured photos actually were quality shots. Even that is not always the case, so I question some moderator's choice who has little understanding of photographic composition.

Let's see some more careful choosing of the feature shot.

    Re: Featured Photos

I'm sure the mods will do fine. In an ideal world, there'd be a panel of judges with a strict set of criteria, but considering the amount of photos posted every day, I don't think that is always possible. While your thoughts have a lot of merit Ronnoco, I haven't had much problem with the photos selected, but then, I'm not as well versed in the elements of photography and art as you are, and I say that with all due respect.

This is, after all, a place where we sometimes "show and tell", and sometimes look for guidance or help. The various forums reflect that, I think. So the FP may not always be up to a particular set of standards, but I have no beef with the shots selected. I applaud the mods heartily for the job they're doing.
