    Mounting a square format photo.

I'm mounting a square photo (10 3/4" x 10 3/4") on a 11"x14" mount board. I intended to have the mount board oriented vertically. How would you mount it? TIA, TF

Re: Mounting a square format photo.

When you ask "how would you mount it?" do you mean by what means would you attach the photo to the mount board, or how would I place the photo within the 11x14 space?

I would center the image from left to right, not really any extra space to do it any other way on that axis. I would see how it looks 1.25" form the top, and 2" on the bottom.

If you're looking for a way to actually attach the photo to the mount board, I would consider having it dry mounted since I'm assuming it's not going to have a matte around it.

Why not mount it on a square mount instead? If you mount it vertically I would center left to right just as Mike suggested. I think vertically would work but I would like to see the photo.

I has to be on an 11x14 for competition. Here is one each way (will not have the watermark). It will be shown in a standard wooden light box. - TF

Horizontal gets my vote. To me, it's feels like the flower has room to spread vs. feeling cramped with the vertical mount. Good luck in the competition!!

Vertically, however i would mount it so it is bottom weighted. I usually mount 8x8" prints in a 12x16" mat with 2" around top and sides and 6" at the bottom. the same would go with any other size mat and print. there is a beautiful and elegant presentation in placing the print in the upper portion so three sides are equal with the bottom being larger.

I don't think the mount matters. From the looks of the picture you are going to do very well. But I vote with Gary.

I prefer the vertical better. To my taste the flower looks like it has been pushed down in the horizontal mount. In the vertical mounting it looks like it has room to rise and grow. I would like to add also that I think this is a very classy shot,Jeff

    Hmmmmm......

I do like the offset vertical. Makes me wonder how an offset horizontal would look -- or breaking the rules and reversing the bottom weighted offset vertical. Nah, maybe not. Either way, it is a fascinating shot. Let us know which mount you decide on and how you do in competition!

Re: Mounting a square format photo.

I really like a bottom weighted mount, but I'm not sure it works in this situation. Like Gary explained "placing the print in the upper portion so three sides are equal with the bottom being larger." For me, the bottom weighted mock up here just looks like it was placed off center by mistake. I don't know that moving it up so you have 3 equal sides would work with in this situation since you will have such a thin margin around the top and 2 sides. My vote is still for centered, and horizontal.

Another option would be to make a smaller print which would give you more room to work with around the edges.

Re: Mounting a square format photo.

Terry, do you already have the print and the mount board? I'm thinking that its a large print for that size mount board for there to be any real benefit of a border presentation. A 10x10 print even would leave a bit more border and work better with the offset vertical, or a larger mount board such as the 12 x 16.
Either way, if you go with your stated sizes, try offsetting even more by bringing the print up close to the top so all three sides are equal.
Ideally, as Mike suggested working with a smaller print or a ;arger mount board will give you more room and flexibility.

Re: Mounting a square format photo.

Thanks everyone for all the info, but couldn't you all agree on just one option?

The mount board has to be 11x14 (or 16x20 for the 'large mono' category and then I would print it larger).

I don't think that it's worth losing the presentation of size for a larger border. The only reason I have the 1/8" border on the sides is to be able to cut some off if the printer does not get it centered. (The border is going to be actually part of the print since it has to be printed a standard size.)

Again, thanks all. The print order goes out today (MPix) for next Thursday's competition.

I would determine the placement then cut the hole in the mat board, use archival tape to the back to hold the photo to the mat board, the cut a piece of archival card or foam board for the backing.

You don't want to have the photo touching the glass. But then myself I would just make a square frame

No glass, no frame, no mat board. This is just a mount board to hold it up during the club competition. There are two size catagories for competition prints. Anything that fits on a 11x14 mount board or anything that fits on a 16x20 board, but you have to use boards those sizes. - TF

Terry, presentaion and its overall look is very important. Why a 10.5" sq print? A 10" print will leave you a nice border all around and enable a pleasing appearance if you are using the 11x14 board. The place mounting it for you should have no trouble placing it as it should be.

That one is already ordered as an 11x14 with a 1/8" border on the top and bottom. I do have a 10x10 of the one below that I am also presenting (4 total) and will give your idea a try. I mount them myself with a little spray adhesive. - TF
