Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

I like this one a lot. The depth of field is great, the color is great and I like the composition also. The left side is a little dark but it should be when this was taken, Jeff

Beautiful! Hope you had some warm clothes on.
I think I would try lightening the shadows or decreasing blacks though.

Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

Wonderful scene. The slow shutter speed effect on the waterfall and the light reflecting off the window gave this some special touches, but the snow and available light gave the whole thing a bluish cast, which is fine in the sky, but not so much on the snow. You probably can fix that, however, by adjusting the color or the white balance.

Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm not done working on this image yet, and I will try to implement the advice you have given me into my future edits.

This is one of my favorite places to photograph. If you do a search on the forums for "Hyde Mill" you will find some more images from this spot. This is only a mile or two from the image of the Hyde Chapel that I posted a few days ago. I think it's one of the most photographed places in the area. For me, the challenge it so create something "new" from this place. It's privately owned, so you options for shooting locations are limited. We are getting dumped on with snow as I type this so hopefully I can go back again this weekend and get some more images with fresh powder.

Thanks again.

I have to say that I'm in awe of all of you on this board! This is amazing.

If I can someday take pictures even 1/100th as good, I'll be happy.

Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

Thanks Melissa, Irie and Mike.

I was hoping to get back to this place tonight for a reshoot. We just got another 4"-6" of fresh powder, the moon is full, and there are some nice clouds in the sky tonight, but I'm exhausted. Perhaps I can get there in the morning before the sun comes up and see what I can do.

Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

This is nice. It has some of the look of a Terry Redlin painting. I would try to emulate the Redlin look even more with this one if it were mine, I don't know if it's possible, but that's the first think I thought of when I opened this post.

For those of you who don't know, Terry Redlin paints those country scenes with the glowing windows. An American Portrait.

Re: Winter Sunset at Hyde's Mill

Very nice. Great, great composition. I would definitely try to lighten the shadows a bit, as this shot deserves perfection.

Hey Mike, this is a beautiful image. I agree about reducing the contrast and bringing out the shadows some more. It's just a bit too dark. good composition and the right lighting.
Nice work
