Hurricane Ike's effect 340 miles away

Hurricane Ike's effect 340 miles away near my house. In the pictures with the cement railing the side I am on has the road that goes along the beach and on the opposite side is the beach under the water, Jeff

    A few more pics

The Hard Rock is in Biloxi and has a beach between the gulf and the casino. The picture after the one with the guitar is part of the Hard Rock also and you can see the Gulf in the background. Remember we are 340 miles away from the center so you can imagine what Texas is going through. The water you see in these pictures is water from the Gulf, NOT RAIN, Jeff

Great images, but a little scary considering how far away Ike is. We who live on the northern prairies cannot even begin to understand what it must be like to go through this kind of weather. Hope all goes well.

We are fine here. I was just trying to give you some idea of how massive and strong these storms are. Remember it is also having effects for hundreds of miles in the other direction. They were telling the people that refused to leave to get markers and write their names and social security numbers on their arms so they could be identified easier when and if they found them after the storm. I think people have the right to choose whether to stay or not but they shouldn't expect people to risk their lives to try and save them later when the going gets ruff, Jeff

Thanks for posting these Grandpaw. It really documents how powerful Ike really is.I guess I can't understand how stubborn people can be....Life is way too precious to risk.Material things can be replaced...

What a terrible ordeal people have to put with. Never experienced anything like that, all we ever had was heavy rain that filled our ditch. We are suppose to get heavy rain tonite, that is in thanks to the remants of Hurrican Ike.

I'm not a rocket scientist or anything, but hearing that would tell me that I really ought to get the heck outta town - even if up until that moment I had planned to stay. That really puts it into perspective.

Absolutely. People were well aware that they could be making a life or death decision - especially after the bit about the markers. I'm sure people could get complacent with all the warnings year after year and then a storm never really hits like this one, as what could happen up here with tornados (although severe, they're a drop in the bucket compared to what you've been through). If you make a decision, you have to live with it. I won't start a rant about people refusing to take responsibility for their own actions...

Here 80 miles NW of Chicago it rained all weekend. I mean literally, all weekend. Closer into Chicago they're dealing with massive flooding which affected the main airport (flooded terminals) and many major roads. I guess this is the tail end of the storm.

Great images! There is nothing quite like mother nature to remind us of our own mortality.

I too have been involved in floods and the like before. It's never much fun to lock your house up and leave

    Stay safe grandpaw

Re: Hurricane Ike's effect 340 miles away

I would like to say that sometimes whether to stay or go may be determined for you. In many cases not having the money to be able to go and having a place to arrive at are circumstances beyond their control. If I came to you and said I want you to take a vacation but couldn't tell you how far the destination was, what the cost of lodging, food, and gas were or how long you were going to stay or how it would effect your job, just how easy would it be to determine the answer? Now adding to that having to pay for missing and damaged property that may not be covered by insurance weighs heavily on what the answer is, what would your answer be?.

Another thing that made some people stay is that more people died in the evacuation of the last hurricane than those that died from the actual wind and water. Imagine trying to evacuate a million or so people and all of them trying to get the same hotel room you want. Also it is hard to leave everything you own and not stay to try and protect all the memories accumulated during a life time.

These are just some thoughts that may have not been considered before judging the decisions that were made. As far as the people that stayed to have hurricane parties and experience the excitement, they are just "PLAIN IDIOTS", Jeff

All good points that I hadn't really considered. I was almost in Fran in '96 in South Carolina, but we were able to find a place to hide out in Columbia (two hours inland) and it hit farther north than expected. We saw some rough weather, but the preparations, etc were interesting to experience.

Things look pretty bad on the west end of Galveston. From what I remember, the seawall that protects most of the island doesn't extend all the way through the west end.
