    ps 6.0 question-

    why is this?
1- in ps 6.0 if one uses "image" on a photo file [of tiff or jpeg] one has the option to use "duplicate" if one chooses. in the process when "duplicate" is left "clicked on" this takes you into a "save as" box that has the file title and copy after it [as its new name][e.i., "summer biking copy"]. if "saved as" this may go into ones "my documents".
2- if one takes another photo file and this time "right click" on it, a number of "options" appears. among them is "copy". if one selects "copy" {in a give "folder"] and transfers that file to "my documents". the file goes there with the original file name WITHOUT "copy" as part of its title [without ever going thru "save as"] [ such as "duplicate" does]. why is this?
3- i have read where it was stated that "everytime a jpeg is saved there is some photo degradation". it appears that in using #1 versus #2 {above} that #2 bypasses "save as". if this "degradation" statement is true, is it then "better" to use #2 method?
4- hope you can "follow this".
    5- thank you.

    It's a question of editing...

    tramp,

Yep, assuming you do no editing to a basic jpeg image file, the two methods you describe will accomplish the same thing: create a copy of the original.

Sure, if all you want to do is make an exact copy of the original file, the Windows "copy" feature is much simpler as it completely bypasses working in photoshop. You can then right click on the copy file name and easily rename it if you want. Windows does not distinguish the type of file when it copies it (you can make a copy of any file on your hd), and yes, if you try to paste the file in the same folder as the original, it will add the text "copy of" to the front of the copy's file name.

The "duplicate" feature in photoshop is completely intergrated into the ps workflow, and would be a much more logical choice if you are working on and editing a file, then want to make a copy of the changed file for whatever reason.

BTW, using the "duplicate" feature will not cause any information loss in a jpeg if you choose no compression...
