Photo Printer Questions

I am brand new to this forum, so please accept my apologies if I am not placing this in the incorrect location.

The information I am seeking is about the printers available for digital cameras. I am working alongside a DJ who works various school events/reunions/weddings/parties and we have decided we want to take digital pictures of individuals at these events & sell the photos to them. We really do not want to take the computer with us, but rather purchase a good (but not super expensive since this is an experiment) printer with a viewer on it for the individuals to observe and approve of the photo(s) before we print it and sell it to them directly. The camera the DJ owns is very simple - a Kodak Easy Share point and shoot.

Any input? We are wanting to keep costs within reason & realize we need to factor in paper and ink costs.

We have taken photos of the various events ourselves for maintaining a website, but have been repeatedly asked by members attending the events if they could get a copy of the picture...... making us think this could possibly be a money making type thing.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have a good idea. I'm very curious about how well it works for you.

Printers are very cheap now. You should be able to get something for $200. You have a couple of choices, depending on what size prints you want to make. Epson and HP both have small, portable photo printers with LCD displays. You could also buy a good 8x10 photo printer if you want to make larger prints. Either way, you can get a printer for just under $200. I'm not sure about print costs, but they're not that cheap. If you check the printer specs and paper cost you should be able to figure it out. I think you can expect about $1 per print for 8x10s and 35 cents per print if you're doing 4x6s. Don't bank on my guestimates, though.

Site member Sebastian (user name, too) had a business doing almost the same thing a while back. He shot outdoor events and sold prints on the spot, so he may have some useful advice about equipment and technique...

I use the Epson Stylus Photo R300. It can be purchased with a small monitor on it and can read several different types of cards. The photos I've printed out on it are awesome and the price was extremely inexpensive. I think I paid $99.00 for mine, on special at WalMart. I have a few scanned photos on my wall placed next to Professional photographs and I can't tell the difference. BTW...I use a Kodak p/s...the DX 4330...It is a full size printer capable of 8 1/2 x 11 or 8 1/2 x 14...or any size below. As with any printer you purchase...use only their brand of photo paper and ink and you will have the best results...
