Which Monitor for Photography / Photoshop work?

Hi everyone, :aureola:

I'm wanting to buy a Monitor to use to Windows 7 - The software I use is Photoshop CS3/CS44 and Adobe Flash CS4, along side Adobe Premier CS4.

I am a wedding photography and I edit most of my images using Photshop.

Ok now the Big question | Which monitor would you guys recommend buying?
Im looking for something decent, around 24" TFT. I want to spend around £300.

I've seen this liyama Pro Lite, what do you think? If not this, any ideas? I'm clueless !!! :mad2:

From what I am reading, the biggest difference in this price range is whether it uses an IPS panel or not. Here is an article with with a list of IPS panel monitors at the bottom:

Whatever you get, you also need a calibrator (such as the Spyder) to get true colors.

I only do stills. If video editing is important to you,...???

That's the question I was hoping someone would answer. OldClicker's IPS panel info looks good.

I bought an IIYAMA crt about 3 years ago because everybody said that LCD screens did not have the colour accuracy, contrast etc. to be suitable for photo editing. My crt and my printer are about matched - when I make a print it looks about the same as what I saw on-screen. However if I post the image on Internet and I look at it on the screen of my business laptop at my client site the result is quite different. The blacks have all gone grey and generally the contrast is washed-out.

The IIYAMA LCD screen you mention looks like it's optimsed for videos. I don't see any mention of the possibility to calibrate it.

I'm using a Compaq FS7600,(crt). Don't remember how long but I have no complaints.
I know someday it will die so I wonder if I should start picking up the free crt monitors that work fine off of craig's list.
I'm not joking and have really considerd picking up maybe 4 or 5 with the thought they'd last the rest of my life. I hate lcd.

The higher the contrast, the better the monitor for still photo editing ? Is that right?

I ended up with a BenQ FP241W 24" which I could afford, and at work they bought the Dell 24" ultrasharp which I couldn't afford
Practically, with both monitors calibrated, I can't tell the difference.

Indeed maybe I am nit-picking LoL (not heard that in a while! )

What do you actually use you monitor for? I edit still images using Photoshop, and do a bit of FLash work on it..

truthfully speaking, I dont know which to get.. ? I can afford the Dell? but a review that the chap above me added states, "its not too good for still image editing, but its an excellent monitor"

I think YES there are few...but at prices I like to avoid. In my personal PC where I edit pics and play games, etc I`m stuck with a ViewSonic Pro series....and I love it, been good for many years now. Now I have the urges to go to something bigger 24" or such....Is hard to find something equivalent to my CRT at a prices I can afford.

On the other hand in my office I work with a cheap Samsung LCD and no doubt my CRT is superior but I think I can live up with the cheap LCD`s and its weaknesses.

Consider one of the newer NEC monitors. The MultiSync P200 series are great performers in color and accuracy. The cost in the United States for these is well under $500US, in fact under $400 for most models. There is the P221 that I have just started using part of the time and for most photo work I find that it compares very favorably to a couple of multi-thousand dollar units that are 1-2 years old.

The NEC does not have lots of 'features' with connectivity or added outputs like a USB hub, but it does produce a great image.

Avoid the NEC Accusync's for photos at this time. They may improve but the color is 'shifty' and they don't calibrate consistently.

Look for a contrast ratio around 1000:1. Anything greater than this is not very realistic as a spec or is 'dynamic' or 'active' and is important to video or gaming but doesn't really affect still image editing greatly.

A monitor that can be rotate to landscape or portrait mode is also a big plus and you won't realize how handy this is until you don't have it!!

Do include the NEC monitors on your list as possibles. I almost exclusively used NEC's in the CRT days because of value. They also were some of the most stable products in terms of color and intensity. Now they've finally started to sell LED units that I believe will match up to their older products.

Well EXCUSE ME for talking about IRRELEVANT matters, and BTW I did not even bring the CRT subject on, and let me remind you that this is an open forum, that meaning that everybody is welcomed to state its point of view, you like it or not, you find it relevant or not.

Could be a better idea to read consumer reviews instead of asking what monitor is great....everybody around here has a different monitor, a different taste, a different opinion, and all monitors have pros and cons, inevitable. Some one might point for some brand and model that for them seem great, but have you thought about that maybe you have a different "taste" do what everybody does...explore you options within your price range and pick one.

Every wedding/portrait pro I've met uses a dual monitor set up.
Get two slightly smaller and lesser monitors and a calibration kit.
For a brand?
Check around for user comments. Look for the ones with the fewest user send backs.
The best warranty, is the one you never use.
my 2cents? I've had good luck with my Samsung, but it feels a bit warm. Even calibrated.
Wish I had two of them though.
