    Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

I had a situation with the online banking. I keep getting a notice stating the security is not updated. I called the bank and they told me the problem is IE - it needs to be upgraded. In the meantime, they said it is not a problem as it just means their computer system is upgraded - mine isn't.

I have this version of IE:
6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2 (there are a few more numbers)

    Do I need to upgrade?
If I do, how do I do this? I can't figure it out.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    Re: Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

In Internet Explorer, look under the "Tools" menu and run "Windows Update". That should take care of you.

It offers a couple options for updates, "Express" which I think only installs high priority updates (which should cover IE). There's also "Custom" which adds optional hardware and software updates. If you choose Custom, be careful, It frequently tries to "update" my hardware drivers to much older versions.

    Re: Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

IE6 is the latest released version,
Sounds like one of the components isn't updated.
Or the latest patches aren't installed.

Do you use Windows upate regularly?

Liz, that's the same version I'm running, and I have automatic Windows Update, so I'm pretty sure it's about as current as you can get.

You can tailor your IE security to specific web sites, so I'm wondering if you simply need to adjust it. Under the Tools menu, click on Internet Options, then the Security tab.

I don't usually mess with this, so I hesitate to give you advice. Maybe someone else can chime in and help...

Thanks Steve. I'm glad to hear you have the same version with the auto update. I think I'll just leave it alone. If there is a way to mess up my computer, believe me, I'll find it. I'm terrible with the technical stuff.

I was afraid someone would ask me that. No. I had some crash problems when updating. I asked someone "knowledgeable" about the updates and was told if I don't know which ones to update, then don't do it because some of them mess up your computer.

I really need to get someone in here to help me clean up my computer before something happens that I can't avoid. I've really had no problems with this computer, thank goodness. My last computer was a different story.

Thanks Erik. I'll check it out. I really don't know what I'm doing. I may wait before I do anything as I'm going to be getting someone in to check out and clean up my pc.

I think after reading the posts here, that I don't have anything to worry about as far as security issues. Hopefully.

    Re: Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

I'm running 6.0.2900.2180 etc so Steve your's is out of date.

Liz what version of Windows are you running, if it is XP PRO have you done all the updates for that.

There is a version 7 Beta of IE as well.

Well, Peter, I'm not overly concerned that your IE version number is BIGGER than mine. Don't really think this is a pissing contest...

And, as Windows Update tells me there are no available updates (security-wise, which is all I really care about), looks like I'm stuck with this old "out of date" browser... :cryin:

    Re: Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

I asked someone "knowledgeable" about the updates and was told if I don't know which ones to update, then don't do it because some of them mess up your computer.
That used to be true a few years ago, but Microsoft have cleaned up their act since then.

I used to be a MIcrosoft Most Valued Professional and was one of the vocal majority pushing them to fix it and make their updates work, I also was a Microsoft beta tester testing those same updates. I had to keep a sacrificial computer that coudl regularly be reformatted !

As far as I'm concerned these days (and I'm not a MVP any more) it's working. I have only one problem, the default for USB disks has changed to fast removal, slow speed.
Where it use to be fast speed, but needed te safe removal button or it got corrupted.

I suppose it's good for the masses, who just tend to pull the plug on a USB when they're finished with it and lose their data in the process :mad2:

I think it is probably not the IE version, but the DLLs that it relies on (probably the Cryptography API) that cause trouble.

Here's my IE version - picture below. As you can see it's 2900.2180 which means it's newer than yours!
The other information is the operating system version and release date.

Now if I was a criminal this is the point to say "send me your login and password and the URL and I'll check it out for you" - I'm sorry but there's nothing much I can do to help from this distance :aureola:

I would not recommend version 7, as it's in beta.
If their websirte will work with FireFox I strongly recommend you ditch Internet Exploder and try the competition. I'm loving it

I also use Firefox for pretty much all my Internet browsing. It's quick, clean, and stable. IE7 is a beta, if you want stability stick with either IE6 or Firefox

I too recommend Firefox. With the latest versions, it works as well as IE on all sites except those loaded down with ActiveX.

    Re: Internet Explorer - Upgrade?

    Thanks Paul,

I appreciate the info. I still get the message - only sometimes - when I log in to the bank - of all places....hmmmmm

At any rate, I have someone coming next week who is a perspective volunteer and he works in computers. He is going to set up our dsl when we move, so I'll ask him if he can help us out with this also. Of course, we're not moving until January. I don't know enough about computers to switch to Firefox. I've done enough damage experimenting during the past few years.

    Hi Liz!

Is the message that the site's security certificate has expired? Before you upgrade IE (although like some of the others, I prefer Firefox), check the date/time on your PC. If it got changed by accident it can cause certificate validation to incorrectly report certificate expirations. The other possibility is as your bank said - that the browser's root certificate has expired and upgrading (or installing Firefox) should correct the problem.

    Question...

I used Firefox for a while, but ditched it. I can't remember exactly why. I think it was way it loaded web pages (yeah, not that that should be important, eh?).

Seems it loaded the page windows relatively small, then resized them up as the image files were loaded onto the page.

Do you notice this with your browser?

Windows IE loads a page normal (full) size, then loads the graphic files onto that page. I seem to remember the Firefox pages changing size as they loaded, only becoming full size when the largest graphic file had finally loaded, or a table was fully expanded.

    I found this INCREDIBLY annoying...

My version of Firefox doesn't do that. I don't recall older versions ever doing that either. Are you sure you didin't set one of the options incorrectly? I really messed up Opera once with a single obscure parameter I don't even remember setting!

Thanks, Michael. Yeah, it's possible. When I did a clean install not to long ago, I simply choose not to reinstall Firefox. Maybe I'll give it another shot...

Yes, that's the message. I did check the date/time, but it's fine.

Yes, that' what I'm going to do - probably not yet though.

Since I'm not updating it for a couple of months, just wanted to be sure that I'm secure at the bank. Yes?
